Super M live pump

I have the pump off the tractor to replace seals etc. When reassembled the pump is tight. It will turn by hand but not freely. The two bearings nearest the front each have 5 springs that fit between them and the cover. Cover bolts are tightened to 25 ft lbs as per the I&T manual. I bought the tractor a couple of years ago and am currently restoring it. Having nothing to hook to the hydraulics I don't know if they worked before disassembly or not (bad idea). The bearings have considerable wear, but I have no idea how much is too much. Is it supposed to turn freely by hand, and what are the springs for? Seems to me they would be completely compressed. Any comments appreciated, including (well sort of) "your pump is shot".

Also the I&T manual says that the driven gear should be inserted with the "tool marks" facing the body. The end of the shaft of this gear has a bunch of depressions on it, I assume that is what I&T means. I put that end in the hole in the body.

have not had a pesco pump apart recently. If I remember correct the springs keep the pieces that side the gears from getting end play. As the gears or other parts wear they keep it closed up to prevent oil passing the ends. Anything over but slightest bearing to shaft play with parts dry is to much. Pump won't turn free but shouldn't be to hard if lubed.
If you already have the seals in all you have to loose by trying it is some hydraulic fluid and maybe a gasket or two. It will probably work but keep a eye on the engine oil level for a time.

You could be right. It will be a while before I get the SM back together, just trying to get the pump etc ready to go before I need to put it on. The "gasket" is the "rectangular" rubber seal between the cover and the body. The parts book does not show any breakdown at all, so if it is mashed down too much I don't know where to get one. In another recent thread you mentioned a 450 pump (they probably are the same or close), no diagram there either. I did try pouring some hytran in the in and out holes in the bottom of the pump. It didn't seem to help.

Don't know about the on line lookup, but in the last printing of a farmall 450 parts manual it showes a breakdown of the pump and parts. Think I remember a mistake on the last part listed in the manual for the pump. Think the number is mixed up with the spring #. will have to look. Most parts weren't serviced.
Have the specs and some other info on the pump somewhere but couldn't find it right off.
Looked on line under a 450 and its under hydraulics # 371. Don't know whats up. They have 361717r1 listed as a gasket and that part # was for the springs at one time.
Also remember the body gasket or ring being round when new or replacements I used were round. Don't remember marks on the gear. I marked them at removal to put back in the same mesh.

I forgot about the mesh, there are no marks and I&T didn't mention it. I think the tool marks were to get the right end of the shaft in the hole. The rubber gasket is definitely oblong, so the 450 one must be different. I appreciate your help.
