Farmall 400 Diesel

I have the chance to buy this 400d it runs very good on diesel but no spark on gas we had to pull start it on diesel to get it running it also has brand new rubber he wants $1850 for is that a fair price and what could all be wrong with the gas.i dont see many of these around here. Thanks

I wouldn't buy it. Tell me where it is so I can scrap it for them. :lol:

"Usually" when they don't have spark the grounding cable on the mag is grounded out. That one has a coil... I wouldn't really work about the no spark thing. The problem causing parts in the ignition system (points, coil, condenser) are all the same as gas IIRC.

At that price buy it. Take a test light and see where you have power. I am guessing that the electrical swtich-over on the right side of the manifold is corroded or the brass tab is broken off. You can always take a jumper wire directly to the dist to see if you then have spark.

I agree with sflem, not running on gas/no spark is not a deal breaker, not running on diesel or not running at all would be at that price.

How does all that wire stuff work on a coil tractor? I haven't dealt with that system yet.

No matter what, it is easy and cheap to fix the gas side electrical.

There is a disconnect in the end of the intake manifold that shuts
off power to the dist when it is switched over to diesel. It was easier
to do this than have you shut the key off once on diesel, but turn it
back on before switching to gas before shutting off. You know the
procedure from the manual.

So the opposite of the mag system. Knife switch closes on mag and opens with a coil.
