Zenith Carb Problems

Zenith carb (10514) on the super A always dripped a lot of gas when I got it.

Old floats were punctured - installed new ones, set to what I believe the right height is - 1 5/32 - drips as much gas as it used it, if not more.

Tried lowering them a bit - still drips

a bit more - the same.

A bit more - stops dripping, but they stick to the sides some how and won"t open to let gas in.

I"m all over the map with them now - doing the foolish try-and-see approach - over and over again. Something"s going to snap (maybe me).

The valve DOES seal - I can lift the floats manually and they do stop the flow, so I know that"s good.

Does anybody have the CORRECT measurement for this carb - or is 1 5/32 correct??? I"ve tried the archives but all I could find was "don"t trust the IT manuals on this measurement"!!

Also - looking down at the floats - I"m ASSUMING they should be symmetrical - but mine has one soldered way off to one side... (foolishly threw the old ones out before I could double check).

That could be contributing to my pain.

don't know the proper float height right of hand, but as a general rule if you invert the top housing the top of the float should be level with the housing from one end of the float to the other, replace needle and seat yours is probably distorted or bad,one thing i learned the hard way with neoprene needle tips is don't apply any pressure to them when adjusting or checking for sealing not even slight finger pressure as it will distort them causing it to leak until it returns to it normal shape also make sure to install the spring clip from needle to float it helps prevent sticking

Thanks Gene - I know it's sticking - just getting very frustrated with it - for the life of me I can't figure out where it's sticking.

As I put the two halves together - it's perfeclty fine up until I get to about the last 1/16 of an inch and it catches on SOMETHING - driving me nuts.

It helps a lot having the dimension verified as correct.

Not easy tweaking these things if you're not sure where they're supposed to be to begin with.

I'm thinking one of the floats is just soldered on wrong - it's really not very symmetrical at all.

Got the spring clip on - but considering a new needle and seat.

They're brand new, and it seals when it's upside down, so I figure they're good.

But - they're not that exepensive and I can keep on set as spares if a new set doesn't make a difference.

Thanks
