corn planter plates

I've got a questions concerning the sizes of corn planter plates. I've got older steel plates (16 cell) with 4 digit numbers and a letter like 1977a but when I look at the table for plates on the seed bag they are numbers like B6, etc. Is there a table to cross reference the numbers. If not how do I pick a plate size - just pick the smallest ones the seeds fit into easily? I've got plenty of plates - just don't have any with numbers that match the bag.

Your seed dealer should have the plastic plates. There are several different sizes of corn seed, so you need the right plates. Otherwise you will either get cracked seed or doubles.

Trial and error. Yup. Then plant a ways in the driveway (where it's too hard to cover the seed) Then count the seeds in ten feet of row. That's what dad always did.

1977A is a small or medium flat corn plate (forget which), 1975A is an xtra small. find an old planter manual (1940's / 1950's) and they will show the iron numbers and cell sizes. Away from home at the moment or I'd throw those numbers at you.

Check the Lincoln Ag Products website. They are the source for the plastic plates. A B6-16 would be a John Deere, C6-16 would be IH. I'm guessing your 1977A plate is an IH which would be a 38/64" x 12/64" x 20/64" cell size (small) with 16 cells for corn.

JD--
B6-16 CORN FLAT, WHITE
16 CELL 32-11-20
Cell size would be 32/64" x 11/64" x 20/64" (Length x depth x thickness). WHITE is the plate color.

IH--
C6-16 CORN FLAT, WHITE
16 CELL 32-12-20
Cell size would be 32/64" x 12/64" x 20/64" (Length x depth x thickness).

Looks like the difference between the IH 1977A plate and the C6 would be 6/64" in the cell length.

K-MO gave you the straight story on plate sizes/numbers. Taking his word on the cell size of a C6-16, the old IHC number for a plate with the same size cells is 1975A.

The planter Parts Catalogs and many of the Owner's Manuals have tables of plate numbers and their celll sizes.
