Old tractor question

How unique is a farmall 400 with an electro plug side attachment? A friend might be able to get one for 800 dollars but it doesn't run? I have never heard of a 400 before it doesn't seem like a desirable tractor? Is this something a collector would value?

If by "electro plug side attachment" you mean an Electrall generator, yes it is a very desirable collectors item.

$800 is getting pretty close to scrap price, so it doesn't sound like a bad price to me. Even if the motor is badly stuck, the rest will part out for quite a lot more, especially if it's with an Electrall generator. A Fast Hitch, if it has one, would be a plus... you'd be "in the black" with those two items alone.

Yes if its a electrall still mounted on the side its worth more than what they want for the tractor. Better run and pay for it if so.

If it looks like this, pay the seller whatever he wants and get it home quickly. The side mount Electrall is extremely rare. Make sure that the Electrall gear box is still there. You can get $4000-$5000 for the attachment any day of the week. If you were to hold out for top dollar, you might even double that.

If you don't want it, send me an email

Are you kidding me?? I'm going to scoure my local tractor scrap yards when I get home. That would pay for my restoration!
I've never seen one, but I've never looked for one either. Number series haven't been a tractor I've looked over for parts.
Thanks for the heads up!

The estimate I posted only applies to the side-mount. Trailer Electralls can be had for $1500-$2000. Not sure on Fast Hitch Electralls. Never seen one. They can be built from the trailer units. I suppose the IH truck model might rival the side-mount for rarity.

You cannot build a sidemount from any of the other Electralls.

Don't bother looking. I am guessing there are only 15-20 side-mounts still intact. I know of only five and I may have double counted one.

This is California. Who knows what whackiness is lying around. Besides, I just like walking around looking for stuff. It gives me an excuse to go.

You did the right thing by posting to this board. Your next step is to "seal the deal" and get it on a trailer. I'd love to see that on eBay and watch the action. Or you could take it to the Red Power Round-up in July as a whole tractor or just the attachment.

The gear box is kind of a noisy thing (gear lash) and it is constant mesh. It is probably still attached to the tractor but some owners might have preferred to remove it.

A picture would be great. If you resell it, let us know the outcome.

One more thing. If the seller has the matching Model 55 baler, please let me know. I'd buy that.

Well, Tyler, you just landed on Boardwalk. Congratulations. Who'd-a-thought there was another "barn-find" side-mount Electrall out there. Most people know what they are and would have made the cheap purchase before you. Perhaps you are in John Deere country.

The forward end that houses the commutator and brushes looks different from any Electrall I have seen. Must be very early or very late. You will find a casting code on the gearbox. It will be like the vertical number on the lower left side as seen in my picture. It will look like *10-7-A* but is highly unlikely to be that number/letter combo. My asterisks represent round-head slotted wood screw heads. That tag is code for the day the casting was poured. We will decode it for you.

Start a new thread so that both the "Classic" and "Modern" viewers get a chance to see any new info.

I see that it is on your trailer. So what sort of comments did the seller make regarding the Electrall? What did he offer for history on his late tractor. I find this whole transaction to be nearly unbelievable. If I hadn't seen your picture, I say you were pulling our legs.

Ha! I am not the owner of the tractor, my good friend is. Here is a picture of the manufacturers plate. I will post all my pics.

It was owned by a Disabled 80 year old man who recieved it from his uncle as a gift. They used it for corn and beans. The electrall has a 110 and 220 plug on the bottom. That was a suprise to me.

This my tag.

Your friends Electrall has been sitting in the weeds for years. He needs to be careful that the windings, in fact everything, passes basic electrical tests. There may be alot of insulation that no longer works. He could have a major malfunction if he lets the smoke out of any component. A complete survey by a professional is in order. On the other hand, it could be sold "as is" and the next owner would assume the responsibility.

Your latest picture looks more familiar. My picture below is my left side Electrall (I have two on the tractor). Pay no nevermind to the planetary gearbox on the drive end.
