Another H Wide Front Question...

Before I do something dumb, I figured I had better ask. Can I offset the wide front by a notch? I currently have the left axle set to the fifth hole & the right axle is set to the sixth. Toe in was adjusted & is ok. The manual does say to adjust the axles so they are an equal distance apart. It dosen't say "Don't!". Am I going to wreck something?

Thanks,
Mike

The manual says to set them an equal distance apart. The manual does not say you cannot off-set them, because it already told you to set them at an equal distance.

I don't know that you would wreck anything, but it might steer kind of funny. Why not set them the same ? You can 'fine tune' your wheel spacing with the way the rims are mounted.

An offset H would be an interesting project...

My sickle mower bolts to the drawbar & I have it mounted a bit right of center to keep the mower's inner shoe in line with the tractor's rear tire. I spread my wheels & axles as far apart as I can get them so I don't run down the cut hay before it gets to the conditioner. Unfortunately, I run out of drawbar holes before I run out of axle, so the right rear is in 5" - 6" from the end while the left is out to the end of the axle. If I have to keep everything centered, no prob. I'd just like to see if I'm able to offset the axle a bit without hurting anything.

Thanks,
Mike

When used for sugar beet harvesting (1940-1950's)the right side is offset several holes to the right & the left side is not. Turning corners was always harder one way compared to the other. Spacing depends on the use you have for the tractor.
Transport at highway speed could present problems.

I concur with Wayne. Road speed may pose a problem but I cannot see anything wrong in unequal spacing for field work. By the time that one front tire has noticeably more wear than the other, just swap the front wheels ;-)
