560 Fuel injector pump

I have a 560 diesel that had the fuel injector pump repaired. When I got it back I installed it per the instruction I have in a manual. When I try to pull start it, it only blows white smoke. I was told that the gear in the housing where the pump is installed may have jumped a tooth or two. Is there any way to insure that the gear is in the correct position? And is there perhaps a different reason it just blow white smoke and will not start?

How would I check? When I put it in I insured that the timing was TDC on the compression stroke. What else can I do?

Did you make sure the pump is set on its timing mark?It sounds like a timing issue to me.I trust you ARE useing the glowplugs, right? If you cant figure it out,you may have to pull a glow plug and use the"thumb in sparkplug hole"method to find TDC,or pull the valve cover and check the #1 cylinder valves.

there is a small rectangular window on the front of the pump that you have to line up...should be 2 small screws to remove...the lines need to be lined up

Make sure that the dot on the end of the pump drive shaft mates with the dot in the slot inside the pump. If they don't match you will be be off 180 degrees.

Were pump timing marks ligned up before it was removed and replaced. Another problem weight retainer may be 1/2 turn off inside pump, will really be a challenge. Mark can be checked by realigning, trace cyl#1 fuel line to hydraulic head, remove line bolt, use airhose to blow fuel out of port. See if rotor shaft port is in view. If not retainer is on 1/2 turn off. Can still time on cyl # 6 if it is, I remove glow plugs and feel air escape as coming up on either cyl 1 or 6. Pump and engine camshaft must be together.
Pistons 1 and 6 are at TDC together but Cam determines which one is ready to fire, and pump must be with cam. Let us know what you find.

Aces: Are you trying to tell that you can't pull-start a 560 because it has glow plugs? Hate to tell you this but I have pull-started my 560D many times and never had it not start. Make sure throttle is at least half-open. Armand

Yes I did pull the glow plug to fell the compression on the cylinder. I do have glow plugs but I am pull starting because the battery dies if I try to start with the starter.

The timing marks on the pump were not lined up before removing as the shaft was broke and there was no way to turn the rotor in the pump.
I will try removing the line and seeing if the rotor shaft port is in view and go from there. Thanks.

I traced the line from cylinder #1 and and it was not open, so I guess it is 1/2 turn off. What do I do now?
