I had my 3 brush gen with a C/O rebuilt but Iam still having problems with it and I do not want to put any more money into it so I have decieded to convert to a 12V alt. I have a mag so the only thing I will have to change is the lights. COuld some one tell me the eaiset way to do this conversion. Will I have to change to Neg grd and what about the pulley and brackets.Thank you in advance

I changed my M over last year. No big deal. Yea you have to go over to Neg ground.

Lower bracket can be done by taking the bracket on there now and turning it upside down. The take the correct sized ready rod and hardware and mount the Alt. The top adjustment bracket will work. I myself like the GM 3 wire Alt. Simple to wire and charges at low RPMs no problem. If using the 1 wire you may have to go to a smaller pully to run the Alt faster.

no need to cut the hood, it will fit under there.

This will do it Using a Hitachi Alt from a 1986 Nissan D21 pickup works very well with room to adjust. S is equal to Terminal 2, L is equal to terminal 1 on a Delco.
The oil pressure switch is NAPA part# OP6616 is a long one, OP6624 is a short one. Both two terminal 1/8-27 pipe thread.

May take a longer belt, you can turn the generator bracket upside down and it will hold alternator, or go to auto parts store and get an alternator bracket they sell for use on headers. On my SMTA I removed the thermostat housing and drilled and taped it for adjuster rod.

Apparently not all "Delco 10si" alternators are created equal.

I flipped my bracket over, and it didn't even come close to fitting in any direction.

Bolted through the factory holes, the alternator stuck out the side by an inch. It was about 1/2" too far forward. The belt was too short.

I had to hacksaw a piece off the lower mounting lug on the alternator to get it to line up front-to-back.

I had to drill new holes in the bracket to get the alternator to fit under the hood.

Only thing I had to do was split the alternator and turn the rear of it to get the plug in going up. I done both H's and M's like this.

The hardest part of any alt conversion is to make a mount for the alt.,,, I am not a fan of all thread in this case but if it works for ya it works...

To give you something to think about the next time you look at a 2" trailer receiver a 12" piece of it has a life time worth of alternator mounts in it...
I cut'em up in 1" long sections then split them in haft drill the holes thru'em and the hard work is done....
