I just got an 800 case ih planter and cant build but about 3 pounds of air psi. I know I need 8-9 psi but she won't do it. 540 pto, bands on 4 rows of the drum not being used. New filter on return line. also the drum doesn't turn smoothly some times it stops then re starts again. Please help as this is getting to be not so good of trade.

look for air leaks.. have had failed rivets where ther fiberglass hoppertop fastens to the steel on your seed hopper... have used sickle section bolts in place of rivets to repair ..aslo is your lid fastened down with all 4 clips? very important..ended replacing hopper top on my 900 couple yrs ago

#1 check gasket on Lid!
#2 check gasket on Drum!
These 2 items will wither make or break your air volume.
Put graphite around the drum gasket. Check all grease bushing and drive shafts, the drum is driven off of the gauge wheels it should turn smoothy. It it is jerking there is a reason!
Make sure the 2 guage wheels are the same, Make, Size, Pressure, EQUAL in all respects, Check drive chains!!
The PTO runs the pump, the gauge wheels run the drum, 2 different systems and drive sources.
If the gaskets, and seals are good then the pump us the problem or possibly the oil level.
If the drum is jerking, odd tire, size, pressures. Or dry bearings, bent shafts, Drive chains have sticky spots!!!! it doesn't flow around the sprockets uniformly!!!!! This can be easily over looked!! Hope this helps!

Lid seals great can't feel any air leaks anywhere. Pump is a big aluminum unit with pump built in to it. By using the adjuster you can open the needle valve and slow it down but just can't get enough air psi.
Thanks for all the ideas

There is a plate on drum make sure it is on the out side of the drum about 4 inches in diameter bolt that holds drum on goes thru the center Had the same thing happen to me on a 400 planter that plate hold pressure off drum gasket when not in use hope this helps

This planter has to be getting some age, if the other posts advice dont help check with soapy water on tank lid, firewall seal, hopper half seams for air leaks, it will cause bubbles, also the fan impeller shaft has 2 sealed bearings that may be dry or lube poorly, replace them. They started making them about early 80s, the 900 series came out in 1987. If the airleaks show up reseal with tube silicone. Also check the speed of IPTO, clutch discs in pto on IH tractors will trip you up also. Good luck
