Square Head Bolt/Nut sockets

Has anyone ever seen impact sockets for square head bolts? If not it looks like I will just have to make some. Some of these old implement and shank adjustment bolts really need some impact wrench action to loosen them up.

I bought an 8 pt impact socket a few years ago from MSC, I believe. I needed it to remove some square nuts to remove my rear rims on my 300 Utility.

I just checked and they still carry them. mscdirect.com > hand tools > sockets and ratchets > sockets > 8pt.

I bought a nice set up to 1" or maybe a little larger at a farm auction five or six years ago about 15 miles from home. I bought both regular and impact ones at the same auction. They sold near the end of the auction when they were clearing out stuff on the shelves in one of the sheds when almost everyone had left. Basically, got them for an opening bid as no one there knew what to use them on. They have certainly come in handy and don't have a clue where they could be obtained presently unless Snap-On, MAC, or other high quality tool company still offers them, Hal.

I see that there are a few showing up on fleebay, some 4 and some 8-point. It looks like both Mac and Snap On will have 8-point new but those will be pricey.

I needed one myself and made it out of square tubing, just measure the size u need and buy the right ID tubing for the nut size, and then used a big adjustable wrench on the tubing as a ratchet

I have a nice set of Cornwell impact sockets I picked up off ebay. Did not have much luck finding many till I entered the words (double Square) into the search than more popped up. Than a little patience.

you can buy a cheap 12 point at the handware store. That way when its worn out/broken your not out much and your good sockets are saved. Also,a cheap socket is softer than a good hi-dollar one,and will not 'snap' like the expensive one will.

What size are the square heads on the bolts? If they're not an odd size size you may be able to weld two old sockets together using the square to fit the bolt head and your impact wrench. I have some that are welded together to fit squarehead pipe plugs. Hal

My Craftsman are NON impact and quit at 3/4.My Protos START at 11/16 and go thru 1 1/8 and ARE impact.

I doubt if Sears will carry these much longer???
