The valve timing can be lost from three primary faults: cam drive or driven gear with stripped teeth, Cam drive or driven gear from cam or crankshaft to drive gear key/s wallowed out or sheared, cam driven gear fractured.
Pretty much a front bolster and front cover removal issue. The mag drive is geared to the cam driven gear. Jim

If you pulled the mag from the engine and didn't note where the rotor was pointing your mag will not be in time with No1 piston and the engine won't start. Hal
