On a Farmall H, the bottom oil pump cover has a depression in it for the pressure relief valve spring, does the spring go directly in that hole or should there be a washer inserted in the hole first? I don't see a washer in the Case-IH parts diagram but I have an extra washer or bushing on my work bench, looks like from matching up the scratches on the bushing, it was in contact with the spring.

Don't forget sometimes washers/nuts/bolts are not shown only listed under the parts that they belong to.

There was no washer in either one of the two oil pumps I've rebuilt.

I thought about that, but what would a shim do, increase spring tension, meaning it would delay when the pressure relief valve opened. They would only increase max pressure momentarialy, maybe on a cold start up, but not increase warm operating pressure, right?

I would think a shim would increase the pressure, especially when its cold. When the oil is hot it might leak past the worn parts so fast the pump can"t keep up, then you would see less that the relief set point.

Sounds like somebody was already in there trying to fix the problem you are. :?:

Probably, except their fix didn't work. I machined the oil pump cover, replaced main and rod bearings. Started it up last night and pegged the oil pressure needle, that felt good.
