starter selenoids

What does a starter solenoid do for starting. My A has one and so does my 300U but my H and M doesn't. Is there a way to test them. I'm replacing the missing parts on the electrical system on my A and one of the parts still there is the solenoid. I don't know how old it is or if worked the last time the tractor had all the parts.

Your starter is not an exact replacement as they did not use a solenoid. The correct starter had a button on the starter and then a sadle sw was used and you pushed your left foot on the rod going to the starter to start.

I can tell the system is an add on as the tractor has a mag and the starting system when added somehow had a starter button (Now missing) off the side of the housing that has the amp gauge. It had the solenoid mounted under the gas tank. I want to return the starting system to the rod that connects to the saddle on the starter. Guess I don't have to worry if the solenoid is any good.

All of the As had a mag as they didnt go to a dist until SA.

Are you sure that's not a fuel cutoff solenoid ?
