706 Hydraulic Questions

Just mounted a loader on my 1963 IH 706 and it's not working quite like I expected. First question, I'm using the side remotes on the shifter side then running hoses to the loader valve. Is only one of the outlets pressure? For some reason it only works w/ the tractor control lever pushed rearward. Shouldn't it work opposite just by swapping the hoses on the remotes?

Second question, there's a fairly loud squealing whenever the loader is working very hard and it doesn't seem to have enough power to lift up the front of the tractor. That's not normal is it? I know the rear remotes work well b/c the 3pt (aftermarket that plugs in the rear remotes) has enough power to pick up the rear of the tractor.

The side remotes by the brake and clutch pedals share the controls with the remotes in back. the left lever controls both the rear left pair and a front pair at the same time. the right lever controls the right rear and the other front pair at the same time. I think it goes left/left and right/right, but there are tractors that are the opposite, or where only one front is used so it could be paired with either rear.
you should only use one remote pair per front/rear circuit, except for front and rear implements that need to be lifted at the same time.
The control levers have a float position all the way forward, so if they latch forward, they might be in float mode which is no pressure. They like to stay in float mode more so than pressure in the forward positions.

You need to check into how the tractor is plumbed, and get good advice on how to make it do what you want to do. Sounds like you have some hoses crossed or are trying to do more than the system is capable of.

If you have an additional valve external to the tractor for the loader that is plugged into the remotes, The loader will only work the way you want with the tractor lever tied into a pressurized position. This extra valve also needs to be plumbed properly to prevent popping relief valves. The remote fitting that will be pressurized needs to be identified. It will have a hose going to the IN port of the external valve. In the simplest way, the external valve only needs to have an OUT port which needs to be attached to the mating remote fitting. If you have a valve that also says BYD on a port, you need to find out how that port is configured, as it gives plumbing options for various types of systems by changing the plug or bushing in that port. If the loader came off a JD, you have the wrong kind of valve setup--this can be easily remedied with most external valve setups. If the valve came off another make of tractor with open center hydraulics like your 706, then maybe you need to utilize the BYD port in addition to the OUT port. It would help to know how this setup was used prior to your use.

good luck.

Thanks for the reply. I've only got one set of rear remotes and those and the clutch side remotes are controlled by the inside tractor lever. The brake side remotes are controlled by the outside lever. I don't think I had that lever in the float position but to be honest I didn't think about that, I may have - I'll try that again. I'm fairly certain it's plumbed correctly, the inlet and outlet on the valve are plumbed to the side remote and the arm cylinders hooked to one spool and the tilt cylinders to the other.

The loader was actually off of a bi-directional versatile, we stretched the frame on it slightly and fabbed mounts to make it fit. There was no valve included, I'm using a Cross brand 2 spool valve. It does have a power beyond port which I'm not using currently. I thought that was only to add a 3rd spool?

Is there a pressure relief in the tractor that I could be tripping? I'm not sure on the specs of the external valve, maybe there is something in there that I need to change?

The relief valve is only 1600 psi originally on a 706 and can be changed to 2000 no problem. There are higher ones but I would not go higher myself. It is located on right side of seat support, 1 1/8 in head on it, about 3 inchs long with screen on end. Just screw it out and install a different one.

Great, I know exactly where that relief valve is, super easy to change. When I look at the online Case Parts catalog though they only list one relief valve and there's no pressure spec listed. Is the pressure spec stamped anywhere on the valve so I could look at a salvage yard or do they interchange w/ any different models?

What about the pump whining, is that normal?

(quoted from post at 06:28:27 02/21/12) Thanks for the reply. I've only got one set of rear remotes and those and the clutch side remotes are controlled by the inside tractor lever. The brake side remotes are controlled by the outside lever.

Yep, that's the same setup both of ours had, when we used the steerable plow, the sideshift at the 3pt was connected to the rear remotes and controlled by the inside lever, and the single hose for the single-action cylinder that raised the rear of the plow went up to the right front remote and worked off the outside lever
