I have a chance to buy a 656 the owner is asking 3000.00 for it. It has a blown head gasket, new rear tires, wide front end. I know this tractor I have used it many times. When the original owner died his son had the fuel turned up on it and I believe that's what caused the blown head gasket. What do you guys think should I leave it alone, his it priced to high? Thanks Josh

I used have a 656 with a turbo and cranked up and and blew a gasket and burned a couple valves and cracked the head.Replaced the head turned it back down to 80 hp ran up to 6500hr and traded for a bigger tractor.Just loved that tractor. If it is just a head gasket that is not a bad job for you to do.To replace with a rebuilt head plan on spending around 600 bucks.

I'd say that price is maybe a bit high, but those NEW rear tires are easily worth close to 1/2 the asking price.

Knowing the tractor is worth some, but if you are not enough of a mechanic to evaluate the repair cost before you jump in too far, better let it go. Make a deal to remove the head and inspect cylinders and all the aspects of the head before you buy? A $3600 656 in running condition is worth it if you have need for it. $3,000 in parts even with new rear tires would be a bit of a stretch unless you have a salvage business and several other tractors you are tearing down for parts.

Tractor is broken so right now it is worth salvage price, about
$1000 ,throw in new tires at another $1000.$2000 be the max
I'd go, How deep are you willing to go on repairs? Minimum head
will be in $1000 range if you are doing repairs and what else,?
head off and couple cylinders scuffed?, bearings? It is almost 40
years old and running ones are $4000 to $7000.
