606 burning out glow plugs

Hi I have a 606 that is hard to start even when warm and always needs the glow plugs used. The tracter doesn"t get used very much but I"m replacing glow plugs on a regular basis . Is there a ballist resister perhaps that is shorted out and giving too high a voltage?
thanks Pete

If you use any starting fluid it can shorten the life (or ruin instantly) the glow plug filament. Hard starting is often an indication of tired engine compression making diesel ignition difficult. When these (and Summer diesel fuel in the tank) can conspire to have you use the plugs longer than normal, and the plugs are like light bulb that have no bulb. the filament gets hot enough to glow, which begins to oxidize the wire like a burning out bulb. My first impression would be to check the fuel characteristics, then compression, Voltage can also be high if the system is shorting through the button, or a out of spec resistor is in place. Check easy things first. Jim

It is normal to have to use glow plugs even when warm unless you just shut it off for a few seconds. There is no resistor in that system, BUT, those glow plugs are extremely sensitive to high voltage. If you are using a battery charger or jumping with another vehicle you can pop them real quick depending on state of charge in batterys etc. Any thing over about 14 volts can blow them and as normal charging voltage is usually over that , you should not put glow plugs back on to clean exhaust after starting engine. You should hold them on all the time you are starting and keep them on until clear and that will normally keep charging voltage down as the generator does not put out enough amps to reach regulated voltage with glow plugs on. I have seen guys blow all six real quick with their chargers and jump starting procedures.
