Anyone have some pictures of F-20 battery box mounting method? Box sits on bracket on frame? Or is the box bolted direct through frame rails?
Any pictures or input would be great.
Thanks oldiron29

When my dad put a starter on his F20 back in the forty's, he mounted on the right side frame rail. It's been there ever since. Al

Al, Thanks for the picture nice looking machine!
I have a belly pump and the control rod is right where your box is. I see how your sits on top of the rail with bracket under rail. I was thinking of mounting mine on right side outside the rail.

I had a steel plate made with a piece welded to it at a 90 degree angle which fits up against the inside of the frame rail. Drilled two holes thru frame rail to bolt it on. Then bolted the box to the plate. You can drill slotted holes in the plate if you want so you can adjust box to your liking.
This makes for a very rigid installation...no vibration and no movement on the box whatsoever.

Bruce, I to am thinking mounting on the side of the rail. But I don't think I will drill the rail I think I will make brakets and a plate as you say. How low does you box sit next to the rail? oldiron29

Here is a picture of how mine is mounted. I can get better picture for you if needed. It sits above rail on a bracket that bolts to the top clutch cover.

Dwayne, Thats probly the most correct because it doesn"t interfer with belt pully use. It does sit high. oldiron29

I bolt 2 cable guards on the right rail to hold a flat plate. I then use a standard battery hold-down to hold the battery in place.

For safety. I use a key and solenoid. By removing the key, I can keep kids from accidently starting it.

Nicely equipped tractor. I have seen most of the options, but not all on one tractor. I have often looked at buying each of the options, but sticker shock always got in the way. I have to admit I am envious. Well done on the restoration by the way.

I built a bracket that mounts off the 2 bolts that clamp the steering post. Keeps it up and out of the way.

I see that Dwayne, I no of an F-20 for sale that has the inline set up but not electric start. I would think that genny is very rare. oldiron29

Well guys all very nice. But not one is the same as the other. Here is the bad question. which one is most correct? oldiron29

None are "Correct!"

IHC did not offer battery boxes for F-20s. Neither did Heisler.

Do it the way you like!

Oldiron29: The plate sits on top of the rail with a piece of steel (same length as plate welded at a 90 degree angle which fits against the inside of the frame rail. I don't have hydraulics on the tractor, so the control rod isn't an issue. The box fits fine between the gas tank support and the tool box.

F-Dean, So the electric start F-20 Had open trays that held the battery? Did it have a tie down bracket of some kind? oldiron29

they didnt have anything. the reason you've seen so many variations is that Heisler didnt offer anything as far as the battery for the electric starts etups. farmer supplied and created on that one.

If i were you and looking at doing one, do it like Dwayne's, it looks the most 'correct' for the period and placment is somewhere its never gonna be in the way

What I was trying to say was that IHC did not make an electric starter for the F-20s.

The starter kit by after-market manufacturer Heisler included only 3 items: a starter motor, the ring gear for the fly wheel and the clutch housing with a mount for the starter. Each purchaser was responsible for mounting the battery.

OK F-Dean, I was thinking the tractor would go to the dealer for up grade and the dealer would insatll a battery holder. Than there would be a standard way to install one. oldiron29
