cub shift fork

I have a broken R/1 shift fork. I was able to get the 2 small broken pieces out of the trans but the larger chunk is still in there. It appears that you must remove the shift rail (not sure that is what it is called) to get the broken fork out and new one in. Thus a split is necessary. Before I do that I want to double check to assure that is the case or by some stroke of luck is there an easy way to change that fork?

You do not need to split the tractor. Remove the shift cover (sounds like you already done that!), slide the fork and rail to the rear. Then place a rag over the hole in the front of the rail, unbolt the fork and remove the bolt entirely, and with a pair of vise grips, grab the rail and slide it back further. Keep the rag over the hole or the poppet ball and spring will fly out! With the rail loose, continue sliding it back until you have enough clearance to slip the fork out.
