I have a 1941 H with weak brakes that need replacement and/or repair. I don't have a manual with the proceedure(s)to accomplish this task. Anyone know where I can acquire some guidlines. I'm a fair mechanic and appreciate any assistance. Thanks.

well the first thing is to get it apart and i cant see needing a manual for that. once apart go from there, pretty straight forward project.

First of all you need to determine why the brakes are 'weak'. They might just be out of adjustment. Remove the covers and look at the linings. If there is less tahn 0.03" of lining anywhere on the band I would replace. If there is enough lining follow the adjustment procedure at the end of the message. It really isn't that difficult a job. Pretty basic mechanical stuff. The only 'tricky' part is final adjustment. There is a screw at the bottom of the cover. Turn that screw in until it will not go any further, then back it off 1/4 - 1/2 turn. Now you can adjust the pedal adjustment for your final setting.

Take the covers off and you will find external contracting band brakes in there. If the bands are dowm p[ast the rivets get them relined at a crane shop or clutch shop. Put them back on. (be careful to not swap sides with lever parts they will go together but not work!!) Screw in the bottom bolt till it pushed the band into the drum, then back out till it is not touching the drum (1/2 turn or a little more) Jim

Its also possible the oil seals have leaked and is causing your brakes to be bad. If so when you get things apart you can get a number off the old seal and NAPA can cross match them. I think you can also still get them from Case.
