10-20 flywheel

Trying to remove a flywheel from a 1935 10-20. Removed the big nut but the flywheel seems pretty tight. I need to remove it because the rear seal leaks and the clutch is oil soaked and has been sticking, Also as long as I have the engine out it doesn,t have a lot of oil psi. Any suggestions on what to look for? Any info. would help. Thanks

First off, welcome to the forum.

Now, for the good and bad news.

Good news: the F-series and 10-20, 15-30, etc. have a low pressure oil system, so no worries on the lower oil pressure. The crank runs on roller bearings and the rods are splash lubricated.

Bad news: The flywheel requires a super heavy duty puller to pull off. The original was called a Greb Puller. Those fly-wheels are on TIGHT, plus add 75 years of crud and solidified oil. Not an easy task even with the correct tool to pull it. good luck, others may provide insight into alternative methods to remove.

Lastly, the rear seal is nothing more than a felt ring. These old girls seeped oil when they were new. I commented in an older post that I think the felt "seals" were more to keep the dirt out than the oil in.

I wish you luck on this if you don't have the correct puller for the flywheel.......

in all my years of pre 39 playing, ive never pulled the key once bfore removing the flywheel.

If you dont have the right tool, your gonna hate that tractor a whole lot in real short order. I dont have an original puller, so i made one of my own that will either take a 'port-o-power' ram, or a 6 ton bottle jack. trust me, you'll sometimes use all 6 tons of that bottle jack before it comes loose. the are tapered and dirt and grease have no effect on them, just 70+ years of being stuck together under pressure

we have had to pull the flywheel off our 10-20 and f-20 and they are a lot of work usually, it really helps to pull the flywheel key out first

Pulling the key first does not make it any easier to pull the flywheel.

You will need a puller, plain and simple. If you have access to a torch and welder one can be made fairly easily.
