Rough running 560 gas

I have dad's 560 in the shop now. We have not used this tractor very much these last few years. It is a rough running and then it can run nice and smooth. Starts fine. It will run fine and slowly it will start to run rough, and then it can run fine again. Works best under load. Not the best excelerator. We will start with plugs, points ect. but I think we have replaced them years ago with no improvement. Chokeing does not seem to make a difference. Does not smoke. Non of my molines have ever run like this and this has me baffled.

Check the distributor bushings. a loose shaft will have timing issues galore. Less than .001" in any direction (radial, not axial) will be OK. A vacuum leak is also a possible problem. Use a propane torch with the nozzle off to let pure (not burning) propane come out. (do this outside) run the torch along manifold to head gasket, and at the carb to manifold. INternal manifold leaks to the exhaust system are also possible, (no external way to check that, it requires removal and filling with water or Kero to find leaks. Jim

Have you checked for adequate gas flow from the tank to the carb?? Might check the condenser, also. How about ignition wires, & the dist. to coil wire? Check for a loose connection in the switch to coil primary wire or the voltage dropping resistor--even the switch??
Air cleaner cup filling with dirt enough to shut down air flow? Would blow black smoke, though if this were the case.

Pull the valve cover and check the valve clearance gap. That gap has a tendency to close up over time, and if the gap is not sufficient the valves cannot fully close.

No actually they get looser then a goose over time due to wear on the cam and lifters and wear on the end of the rockers wear on the shaft and bushing in the rocker arms. Myself i would do a major tune up with the valve set run a comp. test check and see if the intake and exhaust manifold has come loose check the dist. to see if ya have wore out flyweights and also the amount of sloop in the shaft on the dist. install the correct plugs as far as heat range new wires and a GOOD cap and rotor if ya can find one of them today. Set the ing. timing as per spce.'s and RUN the correct gas for the tractor . Makes all the difference in the world.

Not to argue with the expert, but the valve faces erode away, and the valve seats erode away, both will cause the valve head to go deeper into the head, allowing the valve stem to extend further up through the valve guides, which does close up the clearance gap.

In all my years i have never found a tight vale , not sayen that it does not happen most times ya can throw a cat between the valve stem and the rocker arm. a couple times i have Valtured 560 Diesels for darn near peanuts because of bad blow by and a noisy rattling engine only to find valves so loose that it was a wonder it even ran . adjust the valves and change the fluids and filters and work her a bit and it was like a new tractor.
