cold blooded 450

i have a 450 gasburner that seems to be cold blooded when the tempature gets down to about 35 degrees and below, i have d-21 spark plugs in the motor, and it sorta spits and sputters until its run for about 20 minutes, what could be some possible causes to my problem?

Lean Carb settings. If mostly at low speeds, richen the Idle mix screw (in I think)
If at mid to high speeds, turn out the main load control screw (bottom front of carb) 1/4 turn at a time, testing the smoothness by driving at each setting. Jim

My Super M does the same thing at idle Jim. It will run smooth and then suddenly, randomly "pop" at LOW idle.Wide open throttle,it runs out wonderfully. But at low throttle, random "misses".

You think it might be the idle mixture????

I think what you're describing is pretty normal. The M I had would do that, and I had it tuned in quite well. Almost every other M I have been around will do that, too. My friend's D-17 Allis does that, too. If it idles down low, throttles up quickly, dosen't backfire upon rapid release of throttle, and don't miss under load, I'd say you've got everything right.

But, Who am I, anyway? -Andy

I take ALL input here Andy. It might be in the points ???? It is a GREAT running tractor. At idle,it will "pop" randomly. The distributor is tight, the carb is clean. At idle,it will "cough"!

Adding a heating duct around the carb will help prevent icing and deff helps in the cold months.

My 300 does the same thing, got to run it with the choke pulled for about 10 min when it is cold. There is no thermostat in my 300. Is that normal? Is there one that I could put in to help get the engine warm?

It could be in the points, I suppose. I put an electronic ignition on mine just to try it, and that "cough" happened less often. Personal opinion, it wasn't worth the money. I never put a hotter coil on it to try and take full advantage of it though, either.

The only problem I have with those Pertronix conversions is they COULD leave you sitting for a few days!

Example:You are out in the middle of a 40 acre field (or bigger),woods, middle of nowhere!!!(choose your poison) and the ignition goes out.

If I burn a set of points,I can pull out a pocket knife(or sand paper,if you would have that on you??)clean the contacts, and make it back to civilization. If you fry that electronic unit, your gonna walk to the barn and your gonna have to make some phone calls to get her going again !!!! To me those are for "race cars/pull tractors".)

Yea Jim,there is no rhyme or reason to it.It will be idling smooth, and all the sudden it will "flutter" for a MICRO second and the rain cap on the exaust will "slap"!!! Off idle, there is NEVER an issue.
