52 Super M Stage 1,ROUGH shape.Whats it worth???

My local recycler has a 52 Super M stage 1 that they dragged in.When I originally asked what they wanted, the answer was $800.00 but he said if it didnt sell,he might start parting it out.I has been sitting there for months now. When it was first pulled in,it had an open, uncovered straight pipe on it.I couldnt turn the engine over with the fan.The rear rims are shot, the grill is wasted. The U bar and draw bar have been removed.USEABLE parts:Front rims, bolster, maybe the block???Light bar and seat, rear axle parts. The tank and hood could be saved.I would like to get it for the gear/rear axle parts,if I would maybe ever need them???

I know its worth something, but I am thinking $800.00 is a BIT much. They did spend their time and effort dragging it in and it is VERY close to my place.

Well, it weighs in around 5200 lbs. Scrap price is fluxing around $250 - $300 a ton for #1 scrap.

$800 may be a tad high for scrap pricing, but it ain't too far off.

Around here it would be worth around 500 to 550 in scrap. I say that only because I bought an M back in March from a guy for 11 cents a pound. We actually weighed it! I think I ended up paying 540 or something like that. It was complete except for the drawbar. What is it with missing drawbars these days?

Anyway it was good and stuck, same thing open exhaust but sheet metal in fairly good shape and all rims good, tires completely shot. Now the exciting part is that the transmission turned out to be in very good condition!

I think scrap goes for slightly less around here and I don't know exactly where current prices are.
In this area the pullers are going nuts for SM's to use for pulling so one might bring a little more than a comparable M. Maybe another hundred or so? Maybe bring 600 cash? Christmas is coming up!

BTW, are you running an injector setup on your Camaro or just the bug catcher?

It is worth more as scrap than as a tractor IMO. It seems most tractor as worse than described on the internet.

It is an Enderle "Buzzard Catcher" injector on a Littlefield high helix 14-71 blower sir.:)

Have not ran it in about 3 years now.Too many other comitments(STILL having issues with the fuel "set up"also.I think that will always be an issue? :)

Man, that is some serious hardware! That wasn't evident in the other photo! Nice heads!
What kind of transmission puts all that to the ground? Tell me again what that runs?

So Mike, that is a picture of your 1949 Farmall Cub??!?! Bet that old girl cuts grass like there's no tomorrow!

LOL

To me, 800 does sound about the right ball park for scrap price plus a bit of labor. He's probably not being unreasonable.

I'd guess he probably paid out between 6-700. I'd talk to him a bit see if you can warm him up to the idea of saving a peice of history, but the highest you could possibly go is 700.

Then when he doesn't accept, give him the 800 and save that poor thing!
: )

Just like I like red vs. green, I'm more of a mopar guy - but I can always appreciate any engine that needs safety straps.

I was thinking that.....it would make one heck of a lawn mower engine! Was at a car show last year and everyone was tlaking about the 32 Ford coupe with the blown hemi....Looked great from a distance but when you were close all the fuel lines and such were cheap hoses with a dress up kit added.....maybe the guy spent all his money on the body and engine and didn't have the funds left over to finish it right.

Thats when my no sense of humor wife told me I was too picky.......

The best I have ran(Over 3 years ago.) was 8.33 ET at 167 MPH 1/4 mile at Raceway park.At about 1000 ft mark,I felt it "load down".(High speed STILL needs more taken out of it.)Fuel system needs work! Not to make excuses, but it still has a little more ET left in it.

The cars weighs 3806 lbs with me in it.It is a steel bodied car with the glass and interior still in it(no back seat.).It has the stock subframe still in it.It still has the leaf springs under the rear, with ladder bars.A HIGHLY modified TH 400 transmission. You really have to DRIVE this car the whole 1/4 mile.

I have owned this car since 7th grade. It was in stock form then.

How far "off subject" can I get???? lol

We can always assume there is an IH part in there somewhere
I'm partial to the blue oval myself... wrenched on a Ford powered late model dirt car for a while ('80 to '86)... engines by Tommy Turner @ Holman Automotive (former Holman and Moody) in Charlotte, NC.

Holman an Moody. That is pretty cool! Well known group there!LOT of cars came out of them "stables"! :)

(Your gonna make me do it!)I got to work with the 1993 World Pro Mod champion.Got to do the clutch for a few races.Unfortunately when this pic was taken, things were not going so good.(2002)I had a good time anyway. This engine dynoed in at over 2700 hp! I like the horsepower/torq stuff! No matter where it come from. I bet I could spend a week at the truck diesel dyno competition with nothing but beers and have a great time!!!!

I still like my Super M the best! The most useful, versatile piece of equipment I EVER bought. For the money it cost,it does SO much.Plows,Bushogs, grades the road,It even gets used to back my Camaro on the trailer into the garage.Cheap/economical horsepower!

How is THAT for an IH endorsement??? :)(P.S. I get NO funding from the Navistar/Tenneco/I.H. corp.LOL)

By the time Tommy built for us, the shop on the Charlotte airport was down to building for the Wood Brothers, some NE NASCAR modified guy and us... it was not the big Ford sponsered (C-P) shop it had once been with several engine builders. When we got our first engine from them, a guy named Parky Nall (sp?) built it, then after that it was Tommy. I personally was only there one time. After that shop closed, Tommy went to Jack Roush's NASCAR engine shop, but I imagine he's retired by now.

That is cool stuff.

It is kinda ironic my SECOND Camaro was bought in Moorsville North Carolina a few years back.(Drove it home right off the airplane.)The guy I bought it off of had his garage right in the beginning of alot of those NASCAR garages.I turned around in Roush's driveway during my "test drive" right before I left for Indy.

I met Jack Roush years ago before he was involved in NASCAR. Was at an IMSA road race at Laguna Seca in about '85 or '86. A Roush Mustang won the GTO class and as I wandered through the "pits" after the race with my brother-in-law, we stopped to talk to a crew member at one of the Roush trailers. When I asked a question about their engines, he said here's the guy you need to ask, and pointed to Roush coming down the steps from the trailer. I told him I worked on a Ford LM in Kansas and we had his intake manifold on the engine... he remembered Tommy ordering the intake for a dirt LM and we talked for a few minutes. He was "The cat in the hat" even then.

An 8.33 in a 3800 pound car? That's insane! How long does it take for the Grin to go away after you make a pass?

Ah, the mighty TH400! Do you have to use the softer 9310 gears in the rear? And again how many cubes is it?

I will give you some MORE info that will make you think a little. It is still a little baffling to me.

My 60 ft time was a 1.43!!!It felt like stepping on a sponge out of the hole on the starting line.(Fuel WAY to heavy on the "launch" side.)I have been keeping it on the rich side and taking fuel out S L O W L Y !! (Afraid of torching a cylinder out of it!)

My 1/8th mile time was a 5.33 et.The car was haulin balls at this point. It felt like great power.(Doing some minor steering corrections all the way.)Thay means the car ran the LAST part of the 1/4 mile in EXACTLY 3 seconds!
You can actually FEEL the weight of the car moving around past the 1/8th mile mark.

At roughly 1000 ft I feel the motor "bog down"/starting to "rumble".Fuel to heavy on the "big end".Need to take fuel out of the High speed bypass.

I did this with stock GM brakes on the front and 11" inch Mopar drum brakes on the rear.(Dana 60 Rear end.) I use factory DANA "hard" gears,NOT the soft ones.If I had a Manual transmission And launched it harder,I would probably need those nickle gears installed? Engine is 509 cubes

Eventually I want to run it again.Since then I changed intake manifolds (Taller runner type made by Indy cylinder head)and added some overdrive on the blower. That should take care of that Rich condition by adding more air.Gotta do some work to her to get it ready again.Cost WAY TOO much $$$$$ to play with it ALL the time.

My farmall Super M is MUCH more "cost effective".Gets a whole lot more work done for me.

No sir,not as of yet.

Had to finish up on my mother's bathroom today.I am winded out!

I still will talk to him about it SOON.Someone needs this thing.I don wanna see it "melted down".TOO many good parts on it for that.

Maybe I can trade him some of my junk cars and some cash for it? I could get it and part it out??? It really isnt very good to try and make a running tractor out of it.

Mike, you might end up being surprise, then again not. I was worried about that 1928 Regular I got. When I got inside of it, I was pleased to the point of almost being shocked at how good the engine was on the inside.

Parts are always worth more than the tractor if you don't count the labor to get 'em to "parts" stage......

I will see about getting it.Or if someone else wants it,I could help them get it?

I am sure I could find enough folks on here that need Super M parts?? ;)

It really isnt worth rebuilding ino a tractor.

Tell me about it! Tractors are cheap (relatively) fun! And occasionally you even get some work done.

I like the solution of adding more air instead of reducing fuel! I remember doing the tuning on mine one pass at a time. Each pass was like opening a little present to see if what I did made the car quicker or not.

Is that a Bowtie block?

Yes it is.I bought it back in 1989.It is 4.502 bore x 4.00 stroke.I wish I had an aluminum Rodeck block. It might help out in a few areas.

I really wanna stick the "spurs" to this thing really good one time.I am a little scared I might stick it in the guardrails. That engine sounds good at about 8000 rpms.
