behlen power steering plumbing

I am rebuilding a 1953 one owner super m diesel and we decided to install p/steering which was on it at some time. It has the hyd. pump on the engine and control under the fuel tank. Do the hoses go to the starter side where the remotes normally would fit or could we plumb it in line with the pump for better flow? thanks for any info

That's about all I have on priority valves. The tractors are three different SMTAs.

In the close up of the priority valve:

1 o'clock = power from pump or Christmas Tree valve
6 o'clock = power to Liftall inlet on reservoir
9 o'clock = relief valve waste to reservoir
11 o'clock = power to Behlen.

Big oily hose on bottom is inlet to pump from large port on reservoir.

On my 53 SM with Behlen PS , the hoses go straight forward and tuck into the hood where the steering shaft goes through. All else is hidden under the hood. I ll try to get some pics up tommorow if it would be of any help? It also has the valve as in the other pictures, along with belly pump.

great pictures-- thanks-- the owner thinks he had it run from left side of unit and always had poor flow. I haven't found a christmas tree valve as of yet, but I needed a picture of the mounting-- so thats perfect-- thanks

I guess I also have no priority valve yet either- I appreciate the different options of the 3 tractors

Mike, my 1950 H is done the same way as yours, but the pump is a Behlen, power steering only pump. The tractors in the pictures obviously are using an actual "live power" hydraulic pump with the power steering incorporated into the whole hydraulic system which kind of opens up a whole new can of worms as to how to plumb it all together.

Rusty, My tractor has a live pump, christmas tree, and belly pump.I don t think it is plumbed through the tree at all. It has live power to the rear remotes as well. I think anyway. I haven t used those in a loooong time. Now I am curious, and will have to go and check it all out again.I will get back to you guys...

Okay, Rusty was right! ... My live pump only serves the PS system. Thats why the hoses enter the hood next to the steering shaft.

Tom,

your initial post did not make it clear whether you had a IH pump ahead of the distributor or a self-contained belt-driven PS pump. If the later and if the pump and reservoir are one unit, you only need two hoses. One is high pressure and the other is low pressure.

If you are working with an IH distributor pump, you do not need the Christmas Tree valve unless you want two-way remote hydraulics. The priority valve does not require it.

New priority valves look different than the old units. Stiener's has the new valves and have posted a plumbing diagram on their website. Not sure, but I don't think that the new ones have a pressure relief feature but they are suitable for old tractors. They can be installed with confidence but I have never bought one.

just to clarify- my super md has the pump in front of distributor with lines going directly to the unit under the fuel tank and the remotes ran off the starter side and rear of this unit. no christmas tree no priority valve. My biggest issue possibly is an owner unsure where all the parts are

You can easily substitute a common hydraulic 2-way valve for that hard to find christmas tree device.
