Adding an ammeter to a 2424 aka 424

I want to add a used ammeter from an H to my 2424, there is a blank hole punched out on the dash I can use. One side of the ammeter will go to the starter post, where should I hook up the other side? Is #10 wire big enough or should I go to #8?
Getting the generator rebuilt, got tired of charging it all the time ; )

Basically, the SUPPLY SIDE gets to the hot ungrounded battery post, often where the big battery cable attaches to a starter switch or solenoid input terminal. THE OTHER load side wires to the BAT terminal on the Voltage Regulator (or output stud on an alternator) PLUS feeds hot battery voltage to alllllllllllllll loads such as lights and ignition etc often by wiring to the BAT INPUT terminal on lights or ignition switches etc.

If its an older typical tractor genny they are often 10 to 20 amp rated maybe 30 at most and 10 Gauge wire will suffice. However bigger wire drops less volage and if it is like a 30 amp genny Id probably just use 8 gauge but thats just how I am.

The ammeter needs to be installed in the wire coming from the solenoid. I think it goes from the starter to a junction block under the dash. Just follow that wire and spice in the same size as is already in use.

Thanks John!! I think the VR is buried under the dash somewhere, hopefully not to hard to get to.

If it doesnt have an ammeter the wire from BAT on the VR would have to somewhere get to the hot ungrounded battery post, perhaps by a conenction to the starter switch or solenoid input where the big battery cable attaches?? All youre doing is placing the ammeter in series with that old circuit i.e. the Supply side now gets to the battery while the wire from BAT on VR goes to the ammeters other Load side. Similar the loads like lights or ignition etc have to get power from somewhere. If you find that circuit just feed it now instead from the load side of the ammeter.
