Hydraulic Filter - Hydraulic oil filter, for gear drive tractors with pumps up to 12 gpm. Not for hi-capacity power supply. For tractors: 340, 460, 504, 544, 560, 606, 656, 660, 664, 666, 686. For CUB , CUB LO-BOY (Part No: 388084R93)lter 560 international

Both caseih and Oreillys (wix brand) has the high capacity filter. It is about an inch thicker. There was a guy around here who may have a listing on ebay who sells an extension to add to your cover plate to give room for the thicker filter. Around 40-50 bux as I recall. I'm not sure that it is an absolute that you need the thicker filter but it can't hurt. I believe I have the 17 gpm pump with the regular filter but I don't know without pulling it apart to look.

You want the bigger filter and extension spacer made by Allied Precision Products. I just bought one for my 660. May buy another for the 504. That pump tends to cavitate in the very cold weather. It should fix that. Go to link to place your order over the phone with a credit card. No on-line store.

Charles Todd of this forum brought this item to my attention several years ago.
Big filter

(quoted from post at 06:22:34 11/02/11) Interesting. I have a 504 with the big pump and it always starves out when it's cold.
Not that uncommon, but some people do not know they are starving when cold if they are not using a loader or something.
I remember an instance involving pumps that were damaged at the Oliver factory in Charles City and we (Cessna) had to figure out what was happening. Turns out that after the new tractors were built and stored outside in Iowa in the winter, the guys loading them on trucks were hopping on the tractor, firing them up and revving the engines to at or near full throttle when they loaded them. The hydraulic fluid was like molassas and starving the pump. We had a cold room you could put a tractor in (in this case, an 1855 Oliver) that would go to -60 degrees (if you needed to) and tested them there. You could not even pour the fluid out of a can at -30 or -40.
So it's not unexpected that in Nebraska in the winter you would cavitate a pump when the fluid is cold and sucking through a filter.... let it idle and warm up a while. A bigger suction filter will not help that much.

Thanks to everone for the good responses and information.
For my own peace of mind i made the decision to go with the larger filter {Thanks to WARDNER for the link}. Surely wont hurt.
Thanks Ralph

OK that's what I have been doing. After about 20
minutes it will start working. I just try not to use
it when it's cold or keep it over here in the store
where it's somewhat heated. yes, it is a loader
tractor and there is little reason to use it for
much else. I have other tractors.

I know I'm late to the party. Once again I recommend the Allied Precision (I'm not not affiliated) filter extension kit. Seems like you may have figured it out by now :) It was a major improvement for my Farmall 504 and new pump with a FEL.

Choose your tractor from the list.
