Cub ignition

Picked up a Cub at an auction that was a Non-runner that the auctioneer claimed "ran the other day when brought in"... Had a nice, relatively new L59 mower on it. Figured I couldn't go too wrong. Anyway, no spark at the mag. points/condensor are good. Interesting bit is there is a bracket for a round coil bolted on the engine, but no coil.

Anyway, I guess the question is, can I install a regular 6V coil and use the mag as a distributor? Anyone have a wiring diagram on how to do that? Will the kill terminal on the mag work like the break terminal on a distributor?

switched power to coil-other coil term to mag?

Thanks,
rich

You can use the mag as a distributor. Mount the external coil, run a hot lead to one side of the coil, and a wire from the other side of the coil to the post on the side of the mag. You will need a two post kill switch that will allow you to remove power to the coil. If you do this, make sure that the mag coil is no longer connected to the points (cut the wire). The ignition wire would then go to the external coil vs. the mag coil.
Or, you can purchase a new mag coil and be done with the fix and keep things original. A bit more expensive, but easier fix.

Thanks a bunch, hadn't considered cutting the wire to the mag coil.

I want to make sure it ran before throwing any real money at it. Already had the 6 V coil.

No reason the mag can't be repaired. (See link to manual.)

On the other hand, the coil and condenser can be disconnected, leaving just the points connected to the primary terminal stud, and a "round-can" coil connected externally, with a condenser for the same application as the coil (so the mfd rating is appropriate for use with the "round-can coil").

Sure you can, the other fine gents have shown how to wire it, youre just using the points in the mag to cause the external coil to conduct then interrupt its current flow. HOWEVER remember that mag only has two timings, static start timing and advance run timing, NOT an RPM based variable advance like a real distributor coil ignition, and as such wont perform quite as well. One problem can be if a dude takes a small Cub and converts it to 12 volt the starter may spin her over so fast its trying to start at the non retarded (run time advance) timing cauasng kick back and starter problems.
