Famall M starting / Running

I just finished restoring a 1943 farmall M. It has a rebuilt carb, along with a rebuilt magneto which was recently timed. The engine started last night, ran for about three minutes and stopped. I flooded it when trying to restart it. I let it sit for about 1/2 hour, drained the carb and then tried starting it again. No luck....help!!

What makes you think you flooded it? Was it dripping gas?

Try turning the gas off completely, and starting while the gas is off. If the carb is dripping while you're doing this, wait a while, and re-try. At some point the carb will drain enough to be at the right level to run properly.

If it catches, quickly turn the gas back on.

That should at least get you running again, but it of course doesn't solve the underlying problem.

Although, sometimes you just need to get things flowing and they magically fix themselves.

Hard to say just what the problem is since this is your first run. But if you do get it running again, that should at least give you more information to go on.

If you crank the old Famalls much without starting they will drip gas from the carb. I suspect you have something else going on that made your tractor quit. I'd start with pulling the plugs and see if you have any spark.

My M wouldn't start last winter after I'd used it for an extended period and shut it off briefly. I was sure it was flooding (it dripped gas) so I pulled the carb, checked the float, etc, etc. Still no go. I then checked for spark and found none. Frost in the distributor cap. A little WD40 and I was up and running. I hate when I do stuff like that....
