IH 300U Engine Oil Question

Hi all, quick question that I'm thinking will be pretty easy. I have a IH 300 Utility and I'm getting ready to change the oil in it. Last time I changed the oil I just put in straight SAE 30. The manual says to use SAE 30 above certain temp, SAE 20 in mid temps, and SAE 10 in cold temps. What I'm wondering is if there is a better alternative with all the modern oils now. I'm sure the manual was printed back in the 50s when the tractor was made. I don't really understand what the numbers on oils mean (i.e. what 10W-30 actually means) so I'm hoping you guys can tell me if I should just use a straight weight like the manual says, or go with another oil type. I live in central Indiana so we get all the seasons here. Thanks.

Well the newer oils like say a 10W-40 is when it is cold act like a 10W but when it is warm acts like a 40W oil so you get in theory the best of both worlds. You can go with a 10W-30 or 10W-40 or some other such type and be just fine unless it uses a lot of oil then you may want to stay with a straight type oil

I USE QS 10w 30 in my 39 H no problems and since I took out the 15w40 the F-in-Law had in it the thing holds 50 psi instead of 25 psi , , the first # is the base viscosity and the 2nd is max viscosity at operating temp

I recently changed my Farmalls over to Shell Rotella 15w-40. Oil pressure went up and smoking was nearly eliminated. Previously I was using a straight 30 weight.

I run 15W 40 diesel Mobil, aka Rotella, in all my tractors. Mine
are kept in a heated shop. I would think about running a 10W 30
in the cold months if the tractor has to sit out.
