I just got a decal set from CIH today for my H. Now the trick is finding the correct placement of the decals. I've looked through the achives a little and they recommend a book by Guy Fay. I wonder if that would be on the shelf in Barnes and Noble. Is there any good information site on the Internet? I'm going to use the tractor on Saturday so I'd like to have the decals on,but if it means putting them on wrong I'll leave them of until I can do it right. Any advice would be appreciated. Dale

I do not know too much about this subject, but from what I hear ALOT from people on here is that they were never put on the tractors the same way from the factory!!!

I keep hearing that you could have lined up several brand new H's of the same year and they would all be a little different from tractor to tractor.
Maybe someone will give us some more detail to this? You got me a little curious.

There is clearly a little truth to this story. In practice, it is mostly an excuse for "restorers" covering for their own sloppy work. Guy Fay's book is the best information available.

I'm sure that in practice, for example the "hook only to drawbar" decal drifted up and down by a half inch from where the spec said. But is unlikely that any came out of the factory stuck to the drawbar, light bar, gas tank, PTO shield or any of the other places you find them today.

think about it, guys. The decals were put on, year after year, by different men, with dfferent foremen, on an assemble line, sometimes first thing Monday morning, sometimes at 5;00 on a wintry Friday afternoon by a men in a hurry to get home. Of course they were all different,.Probabble not every decal was pout on all the time. I bet some guys preferred to stick some on here, some there.

If you could go back in time, and visit the factory and actually watch those brand new Farmall Hs coming down the assembly line, and then observe the decals being applied, I'd bet you could stand right there all day long, maybe even for several days, and you would not be able to detect even a subtle variance in the placement or location of those decals. Those assembly line workers were very proud of the work they did, and if they messed it up, the mistake would be caught at the final inspection and that tractor would be side-lined and directed to a "repair" area. I'm sure there were some slight tolerances allowed, but nothing that would be easily discernible to the common lay person. The worker who did not take pride in his work back in those days was usually shown the door rather quickly.

When cranking out that many tractors, perfect continuity is NEAR impossible to achive & I don't think they used robots at the time. It's not just IH either. I had a Case F2 combine with the JI Case decal on the grain tank at a 45* angle. The person who did that one was either drunk or in a hurry.

It would be helpful if someone with an original painted tractor could post their measurements. My H has been repainted once, and I plan to put new decals on it after I do it again.

I see a lot of different answers on this subject. This is interesting.

Would it be safe to say that the decals would all be in the SAME SPOT from tractor to tractor, but if you measured ALL of them from the factory, you would be bound to find some/many of them fractions of an inch off from tractor to tractor ????

NOT trying to start a fight on here, really.I just work in an equipment manufacturing plant and I know first hand that our decals have a certain layout and location that HAS to be maintained, but the EXACT measurement of their location can get a little "skewed".(These are OSHA/ANSI/Warning/AND Brand Name decals and HAVE to be on there!)

In other words, leaving a decal off or moving it to a new location is a BIG NO NO !!!But if it is 1/8" to 1/2" different in all the other same trucks in the run,I gurantee it will not be changed out here! :)

I am OK with close. I would bet if a half dozen people with original decals posted, we could determine the statistical position with the margin of error.

Go with the placements shown in Guy Fay's book and you will be in good shape for the "Farmall Police".

Thanks for all the replies. I went over to the F in L's and looked at his H. It's hard to say if the decals are original. I'll have to get a copy Guy Fays book. My H is a 46 anybody know what light switch decal do I use? It has four positions on the switch[three clicks] Thanks Dale

It is possible that your Library has the book you are looking for.
Just a thought.
'Originality Guide', 'Farmall Letter Series Tractors' by Guy Fay and Andy Kraushaar.
Good luck
Dennis
