what is a hystler overdrive for a Farmall M

It is a transmission modification that places a new set of gears into an H or M Farmall (and other of that series). It consists of an alternate drive path for the countershaft. THis attachment drives the countershaft faster than originally designed. The effect is to add 4 more speeds that are between 4th and 5th gear speeds of a normal tractor. These speeds are handy for pulling wagons, and raking throttled back. Useful for field operations like rotary hoeing that require speed but not drawbar force.
The shifting is: 1-2-3-4-h1-h2-h3-h4-5.
It is not shiftable on the fly, and does not make the tractor slower in any gear.
M&W and others have made this attachment. Jim

excellent explanation, thank you. Makes sense, the tractor was used with a seeder so I understand now why they wanted the higher speed selections.

I think I've asked this before, did anyone ever make an underdrive or a stepdown transmission for an M/SM?1st is just too fast sometimes. Thanks,Steve

Thereare two issues that are very important!!!!!
1} The PTO is going to run at the same overdrive, you would need to either not use it, or use a shaft tach to determine the throttle detting for 540rpm. Not much power at less then 1/2 throttle.
2} The Belly pump Liftall (if it has one) must be disconnected and not used because of that same overdriven gear set. If converted, or is a stage II tractor, it will have an engine driven Hydraulic pump on the engine in fromt of the distributor. If so no issue there, it will work correctly. (pto still wrong in OD) Jim

Not slower than the Slow gear set that was optional from IH. it was much slower than the normal 1st. It had a drive gear cut into the shaft of the lower ("lay") shaft on the trans instead of a keyed to the shaft gear. They are desirable for tractor pulls of some types, and other tasks like harvesting or slow cultivation. Setups were made to run hydraulic pumps from the engine driving larger displacement motors that powered the belt pulley drive gear. this allowed dramatic speed reduction "Creeper" but had no pulling power. The main clutch had to be blocked down to use it.
Tobacco and transplanting vegatables was a factor in its use.
The use of much smaller tires on 24" or 30 inch rims would slow one down, but reconfiguring the front to be level would be a task.
Adapting Planetary gears from a later W series would be interesting, but not easy.
Great question. Jim

Jason the Red owns this attachment. He doesn't know much about it but believes it is a shiftable speed increaser. I suspect it can be modified to be a speed decreaser by repositioning gears.

Anyway click below for another thread on speed modification for H and M.

An aftermarket step-down was probably not much in demand after the SMTA and 400 came out with the Torque Amp built-in.

Wardner, I've done ALOT of searching on the web about this attachment. I now believe it is a rotary hoe gearbox. I still have not done any official test, but from what I gather from the information I have obtained is that it provides a speed between 4th and 5th gears in the factory transmission gears. I have only seen one other one identical to it (which came off an M, mine is on an H), and still have no manufacturer.

P.S. I wish you would stop using that pic, it makes me cringe to see the condition my tractor was in when I first bought it :)!!! This one looks better!
