ok.... tractor is nearly ready for paint.

replaced water pump tonight and a few other little things.

Next is to removed wheels and head to paint shop.

oh what do you think of that last hyd line, thinking I should replace it. Every OTHER hose & wire is replaced, just seems out of place.

wedding plans are coming along great too... it's Sept 24th so we had better keep on my tractor project :)

thanks for all the comments along the process!

(quoted from post at 09:32:03 08/30/11) Pressing the "LIKE" button !!!! (You can always replace that hose at anytime.Doesnt have to be before paint.)

I was just thinking it would allow my guys to do good job painting behind it.

thx

I see you are painting it still assembled, you will miss 30% of the tractor, or else have too much paint in those places, and nothing behind some parts.

Many other parts will be removed before paint, but all the prep is done.

Congrats Colby,
MAN I know how much work that is !!!
Coming along very well I would say !!
I really appreciate your taking the time to share it with us, interesting post you have going here. Heck, even I'm getting anxious now.

Does the distributor cap have a number 1 next to one of the terminals and were the wires in the correct place? Normally the distributor should be turned so that the tachourmeter drive faces the rear of the tractor. That eliminates some of the bend in the cable. If you can just move the wires one hole it is easy to change. If the distributor drive is out of time it means changing the timing the oil pump.

Looks like a great start! Just a few hints from the been there done that section...make sure you take off the light housings and spray them separately. The pto shield should be off. I recommend taking off the oil filter housing because it is so much easier to get paint on the engine and the housing covered well. Tape off the axles so they can be either plain metal or flat black, and for the love of pete, don't paint the pto shaft! Tape it off!

How much did the factory have assenbled when painted??? From what photos I have seen on alot of the Farmalls,MOST of the chassis,(Minus wheels, and sheetmetal)was assembled when it was painted.

There has gotta be some factory photos of the 460/560 tractors being painted at IH some where???

(Just wondering)

Mike--The letter series was mostly assembled when painted at the factory, not sure about the early 6 cyl tractors, which are more complex; I doubt if there was much off of them. My only point about this is that if you really want a good job, the tractor needs to be stripped and parts painted separately. I did a 460 HI-Utility that way. There was absolutely nothing left on the engine or chassis. Not saying I will ever do another one that way. With the letter series it is easy to take everything off. Moderate with the 300-450. Harder with the 60 series and next to impossible with anything larger, particularly diesels.

Thanks CNKS,

Yea,I am agreeing with you.I am sure The more stuff you can get out of the way,the better.Just shooting my Ford with the "stripped" engine in it was a challenge.ALOT of angles to try and hit.

going to paint this week.

removing fuel tank, generator, pto sheild and a few other things too like frame rails.

thanks for everyone's help, super excited.... finally getting close.

Hoping to have done by wedding on the 24th of this month! Not to worry we have good team together to get this done, but will not cut corners either.

This will be a AWESOME job when it's done, and it will be done right.

To be replaced with NEW: water hose, hyd lines, all wiring, emblems, seat, steering wheel, plugs, dist, coil, etc are all ready to be replaced after paint. Lots of work to do!

Busy nights in the shop in Morton IL.
