Several years ago I had trouble not getting enough gas to the carb to start my F14,so I built up the fuel pump rod and seemed it fixed the problem. This tractor has never started easy.Tonight I went to start it and it would try to start but would not keep running.I have a cut off valve installed in the line going to the carb,Thinking the carb was flooding I turned the valve off,and as soon as I did the motor started, this has happened twice.Im going to redo the pump rod,is there any way to tell if you have the correct amount of gas.

Check the return line to the tank. If it"s plugged you could be getting too much fuel pressure at the carb.

Its been my experience with mine, that once its flooded, its flooded, and the best thing to do is go inside and have a cup of coffee before trying again, its just not going to "unflood" itself that quick. First thing Id do, is to replace the plugs wit hAutolite 3077s, if you havent already done so. Lower your float level just a tad, or put another gasket under seat for the float needle, so tha you have 2. Then ceck the fitting on the return line going into the tank to make sure its not plugged.

Also, when I start mine, I have the mag just barely set off of "Off", the throttle about half way, and only choke it one, maybe 2 pulls of the crank. (Depending on how long it has been sitting)

Adding to what has already been stated, there were 2 configurations for fuel return that I know of. One had the breather that went on the hood, and the other was a return directly to the tank. In both cases, these need to be funtional for easy starting. I have tried going directly from the fuel pump to the carb. Works, but your carb has to be in excellent condition, and even then, it is prone to flood.

My experience with these is that the carb is VERY touchy. however, once you get it right, they run and run.

Thanks,I feel the carb is good,The T is open and actually drilled out a bit,it just seems funny that as soon as I turn this cut off valve off that the motor starts and runs good, and starts instantly.Im going to revisit the fuel pump becaues I know its pumping more fuel than normal. My 14 also has a starter which makes it a little different starting

think about how your pump works. The thing that gives pressure is the spring. The push rod just reloads the spring and the spring is what pushes the fuel. If no fuel leaves the pump the spring is compressed the fuel just sits there under pressure and the rod doesnt do anything till fuel leaves and the rod can contact the linkage to the spring. Maybe look at float level for flooding on start up
