Trying to take inj pump off 1466. Need some info.

I need to take my inj pump off my 1466 and to a pump shop. I know I need to set the timing before I pull the pump but I can not find the pointer on the chank shaft pulley. It's there on my 1486 but should it be in the same place on my 66. When I pull the pump, do I take the bolts out that hold the gear to the pump or leave the gear on the pump?

You need to take gear off with the three bolts. Timing marks on the 66 series are on the flywheel under cover on right upper side of ta clutch housing. The are a couple of different ways to know if you are on number one or six and you need to know that. One is to take the side cover off of injection pump and watch for the mark on gear and when it shows up you are on number one cyl, comp stroke. The way I do it is to just turn it up to timing mark, I believe 18 degrees before tdc, take pump off and then pull throttle, turn pump and see which port ejects fuel. Had to take off a lot of pumps under warranty and could not break a seal so that method works well. Can take off valve cover also but lot more work.

Pete. If I line the timing marks on the flywheel, can't I take out the plug on the inj pump timing gear and shine a light in and see if the pointer lined up on that mark with the flywheel mark should not work to get it in time? thanks Larry

Pump turns half speed of crankshaft so that mark will align on number one and number six. The head of the pump is reduced to half engine crankshaft speed therefore the mark on the head drive gear(under that side cover) will only align when number one is on comp stroke. Actually, it won't line up exactly because it is used for internal timing when repairing the pump but you should see it go past some degrees before the other mark on pump lines up.

Whoa, got that wrong , pump camshaft turns crankshaft speed, head of pump only turns half of crankshaft speed. Rest of answer should be correct.
