300u manual steering box adjustment..

i have read the IH-10 manual and it gives a very complicated version of adjusting the steering box, is there a simpler process for this??

The simplified adjustment for mesh in worm gear, is with arms unhooked, adjust screw in until it binds when turning steering wheel to find the center position and then back it out just enough to turn freely. The tightest spot is the center position and wheels should be straight ahead at that point. That is common adjustment procedure on all worm boxes. Might work, might not.

I adjust the mesh such that there is just a very small noticable binding at the ends of the travel. The most wear is in the location where the steering stays most of the time, going within a few degrees of straight. In my opinion that wear if taken up on center, will causw heavy binding at the ends of travel. Unless a gear set is almost new it will have play at the center of travel when adjusted to not bind at the extreemes. Jim

Mike,
The only input I have is do not try to take out slop by overtightening the mesh.
I complained for years about my manual 300U being hard to steer and then found out it was my own fault for having the mesh too tight.
