Just purchased a 1980 1486- had a 1466 but wanted a factory cab. Have a couple of questions I would like help with:
None of the lights work except the two rear flood lights- checked the fuses and they tested Ok- any quick place to check before starting to look at the whole harness?
How does one get a SMV to stick to the fuel tank- cleaned the tank with simple green and then acetone but the adhesive SMV won't stick- what is the trick?
Thanks in advance.

Trouble shooting wiring on line is way tough, go from what has voltage to what doesn't. 3M post and loop. or other brand industrial strength velcro like material works very well, put it on all three edges about an inch inside the edge. Jim

About the only common problem area for the lights on 86 series is the fuse holder itself. They make poor connection, get hot and then don't make any connection. Check to see if you have power on both end of the fuse holder with fuse installed. Have replaced a ton of those fuse holders over the years.Other than that it could be any connection or series of connections.

Throw them fuse holders in the trash can and install self resetting breakers of 20 amps with eyelet ends on the wire and never look back.

The SMV signs have been coming off those tractors since they were new. The best solution may be just to put a metal one on just behind the one on the tank.

If you want to try again to get one to stick to the tank try this method. Completely fill the fuel tank. Park the tractor so the tank faces the sun to get it warm. The fuel load also helps to expand the tank. If you put it on a cold tank when the tank warms up and expands it can cause the SMV sign to start peeling off.

Clean the area as best you can. I like to use Brake Cleaner because it will remove any fuel residue left on the tank. Sand the tank to get it smooth and help get it clean. Flush the area with brake cleaner and when it has evaporated, install the SMV sign. If the gods are smiling on you it may stay on for a while.

Ha Ha funny!!! I distinctly remember getting a BRAND NEW 886 for what my mom and dad say was about my 6th bday. Got pictures somewhere to prove it. Only thing that left BEFORE the muffler was the SMV sign. I'll bet that tractor's got 20,000 hrs on it, and has never even so much as been touched with a wrench!!!! Ertl makes just like the real thing....only smaller!!
