504 hittin on 2 cyl.

I was out planting corn with my 504 row crop..got off the tractor for couple on minutes and after got back on it started to run rough, put in new points and plugs..it is getting spark to all 4 plugs. Could it be the coil?

Using a pair of insulated pliers, pull off one plug wire at a time (plug end) If a cylinder is missing consistently, it will make no difference. If it is running consistently, it will probably kill the engine. Note which of them make no difference,
If they are 2 and 3m it could be a head gasket between them.
Consistent misfire leads to a compression check (after what you have done, and finding which are not working)
A cracked or loose intake manifold can also have this effect if the compression checks out.
At or more than 120 PSI each, + or - 15 PSI. throttle open, charged battery, all plugs out, and at least 5 compression strokes. Jim

Thanks Janicholson..it was #2-#3 that was the problem..I have a spark tester (attaches to the plug & wire) and getting good spark.
I was going to try spraying some carb cleaner around the intake manifold and see if how it acts. I do have a tiny leak on the head gasket.
Thanks again..
btw: Checked the fuel screen and it was clean.

I have a 504 (gas) as well and it had a very similar problem. After checking ignition components, fuel system, etc., I eventually found that the intake manifold gasket was leaking. It was a big enough leak that I could press a rag against the leak and the engine would run much better. I installed a new set of gaskets--an easy fix.

THe gasket between 2-3 can blow and leak compression (and fire) between them. Pulling the valve train off of the valves then putting air pressure into #2 and listening in #3 with a piece of small tubing (leak down test) can also confirm the gasket integrity. It will maks dramatic noise in the other cylinder. Jim

Well I picked up a new coil..and that didn't help. Then I sprayed started fluid around the intake manifold, no change, going to get a compression tester and see if the head gasket is leaking between #2-#3 cylinders.
never replaced a head gasket before.
Is this a big job? Or do I need to take it in?
Thanks for your help, guys.
