560 shearing ring gear bolts

Was another common mode of failure for the 560 shearing the ring gear bolts?

We had a 560 many years ago and from what we recall it sheared the bolts holding the ring gear to the carrier in the differential on at least 3 separate occasions. Never had any axle bearing problems, but I think it was a later tractor that came from the factory already updated.

The 560 ratio is higher on the 560 than on the earlier models. This is due to the higher speed of the six cylinder engine. The shearing force on the bolts is higher. Seems like IH engineering must have been aware of that. The calcs would have been easy to figure.

mkirsch That was not a problem. I worked them for 14 years. Make sure you use grade8 screwsor socket head cap screws, they are Grade8.

Taxing my memory here, but I am going to say, IH switched to a deeper, harder nut and leaving out the locking strip, plus increasing the torque on the nut. Don't remember any shearing the bolts off but many were working on it. I can't remember if this was done at the time we put in the final drive updates or later.
