What Spark plugs do I need.

On my 1955 IHC 300 can someone please tell me what spark plugs I need & gap setting? Also, what size spark plug socket do I need? I tried today to remove the spark plug but my 13/16th is to large,11/16 to small, I'm thinking it's metric but I'm not sure. Thanks for any help...

I always had good luck with Champion D-15Y spark plugs. They should be gaped at .025. The D-15Y use a 7/8 deep well socket.

Yeah 7/8 but it needs to be thin wall some heads
don't have much room in there. I read a discussion
about this once and how a Craftsman socket worked
best because it was thinner. I went and looked and
sure enough, my 7/8 deep well is a Craftsman.

Autolite recomends 3116s for the IH 4 cylinder engines in the "Letter" series & "hundred" series tractors & 386s in hte 6 cylinder engines in the 4/560s & up.. Gap is .25 but I usually set mine a little wider, .28 or so, in the tractors that have electronic ignitions

To remove the plugs you need a deepwell 7/8ths socket and it neeeds to be a thin wall socket a thick wall will not fit into the area in the recess of the head. Good Luck Kenny.

[b:3cc1138e1e]Thank you everybody[/b:3cc1138e1e] for your replies. Got my new plugs changed yesterday with the 7/8th socket I picked up at the same time, now it's running much better...

Now I'm going to change the points. Any suggestions on...

[b:3cc1138e1e]What type? (manufacturer)
Part Number?
Gap Setting?
Dist Cap?
Rotor?[/size:3cc1138e1e][/b:3cc1138e1e][/color:3cc1138e1e]

I'm also thinking that maybe I should change over to electronic points?

[b:3cc1138e1e]Any Yea's or Nay's on this?[/b:3cc1138e1e]

Have you checked the price on electronic ignitions? That alone is reason enough to stop me. Another reason to not do it is that if the electronic ignition fails, you are dead in the water until you go out and buy another unit.

[b:53e8e6f8c7]Nope I never looked yet, It was just something I was thinking about as I was putting in the spark plugs. If I go to the parts store for a regular tune up kit with points, cap, rotor, ect...what part numbers do I ask for? Any ideas, because of the age of this tractor I'm not sure what to get.[/b:53e8e6f8c7][/color:53e8e6f8c7]

The first thing you need to determine is if the tractor still has the original magneto ignition, or if it has been converted to a battery ignition distributor, and if it has the battery ignition, does it gave an IH distributor (horizontal) or a Delco-Remy (vertical).

Yes, 12volt neg gnd. & the distributor is horizontal orientation. When your standing looking at the right side the dist is bolted to the hyd pump & it has points now.
