Farmall 560 PTO

I have a 560 that the pto(clutch type) runs all the time. I cant turn the engaging shaft more than a 1/4 of an inch in either direction. I took the cap off where you adjust it and can see movement when I try to rotate the engaging shaft. Is this possibly just an adjustment problem or something more serious. I have a 400 with planetary type, can the two units be swapped out?

If you replace a clutch type with a planetary, the PTO will run too slow. The IPTO driven and driving gears at front of clutch housing are different.

This is the reason you only see planetary PTOs on the 660. The higher engine speed (2400 rpm) makes it necessary to use the planetary reduction in the earlier PTO.

Well, all of the internal parts, over center mechanism etc are subject to wear but the biggest problem I have had to repair on the clutch type pto is that it wears the keyway out in the operating shaft. I used to replace the shaft of course as they were reasonably priced years ago, but now days, I cut the key way out and install a larger key. Last one I did I used a dremel. Not quick and easy but my labor is cheap nowdays. Thing is, you have to look real close to see that the lever is moving and shaft is not following it to same degree therefore not much movement where you need it to get over center engagement and still able to apply brake.
