A with duals?

Being as we've had a 4 day stretch of dry weather, I took the 'lil Super A up through the pasture to the woods, and nearly buried it, even with 11.2x24's with about half wear left, and new chains. This is crossing sod that hasn't seen a plow in probably 30 years. Last year in July, I did bury it while brush-hogging on the lower end of that pasture.

Normally I'd use the bigger tractor - the one with the 16.9x38 rears, but I've got that one in the garage for some serious tear-down, and between everything else that needs to get done (it's spring) it may be months before I get it back together.

So I've got a question: anyone ever seen an A with flotation fronts and rear duals? How would someone go about fitting one up for heavy/wet soils?

You can actually put an extra set of wheels on the Super A easily. You just need two of the pressed steel wheels; dish one wheel in and one wheel out on each side. The standard lug bolts will be long enough. I have done a Super A this way. It dramatically increases stability and the ability to go through wet places. I didn't have wide flotation tires on front but the duals helped tremendously.

I think a person could find another set of the pressed steel centers and rims, turn the dish on the inside set in and the dish on the outside set out. Put gr. 5 or heavier threaded rod in the holes, put lugnuts on the inside wheels, and put another set of lugnuts on the outside wheels.

I worked on a Super A once that had a cobbled-up set of rims and 7.5L-15 tires on them. It had 5-bolt hubs and rims off of a old Ford? car. Somehow they fit and had plenty of clearance away from the spindle. It had nice custom hubcaps, too. If the original front rims could be widened, it'd looked a lot nicer. As long as the tires don't hit the tie rods or spindles, and the tire height is close to the original, it should work ok.

If you search for farmall BA or something like that you can find
photos and discussion of Old's custom mowing tractor that he put
together a few months ago from some Farmall A and B parts. He
had a dual on one side, I think the left, but it looked pretty handy
and I'm sure it could be done on both.

I was thinking the pressed steel wheels might work for the rears, just wasn't sure if they would mount back to back. Thanks for the confirmation. I'm thinking like AG suggested, the allthread and nutting one up would be easier than trying to line up bolt holes with tires that in all likelihood won't be the exact same diameter.

Still, the fronts were cutting in pretty good, and it was obviously adding considerably to the drag. Did IH (or anyone else) have something wider available that would mount to the existing 3-spoke/clamp fronts? Or do I need to have my local machine shop build a set that would handle something like a 9.5L-15? It would probably be overkill, but then again, extra float beats cutting up the pastures.

Besides, what would a picture of it be worth? :D

Like the other post said original centers and tires will work on the rear. For the front get 15 wide rims cut the center our weld the three tabs on the rims and you can have wide on the front. You did say you now have the three ears on your present rims. You could weld them to the new rims and that has been done.

Rather than ruin the original rims, use flat steel with a hole drilled in it. The replacement rims have flat tabs instead of the U-shaped straps anyway.

(quoted from post at 01:50:35 04/12/11) He wants wider rims to run floatation tires and the new ones are still 3x15

Sorry about both the confusion about the fronts and the delay getting back here (been kinda busy), but the fronts are not tabbed, they are wedge locks. I didn't know an A had tab mount fronts. I suppose it might be possible to bolt through the spokes to tabs instead of the wedge though, which would make coming up with wider rims easier.

Thank you all for the suggestions.
