Original tire size for a 1941 H

I've just purchased but not yet received a set of 12.3 x 38 Firestones. Last night I was looking at the tractor, it currently has 11.2 x 38 tires. What size would the tractor have come with, where both options? Which size do you most often see on H's now?

12.4x38 is a very common size for Hs and Ms in my experience. I think 11.2 is what they had standard from the factory but 12.4 was an option (to the best of my recollection). I have worn 14.9s on mine which are a little funny looking but they work fine for me and it is a work tractor and not intended to be authentic. I think you'll be happy with 12.4s.

Measure the width of the rims. Most H Farmalls have a 10" wide rim, and the correct tire size for the 10" rim would be the 11.2x38, BUT, due to some changes in how the tires are measured, the NEW 11.2x38 tires actually look way too narrow and small (my opinion). The 12.4x38 tire looks a lot better, and is the size I see and have seen on just about every H Farmall I have been around in the last 60 years. 12.4x38 is what I have on BOTH Hs that I use, and both of those tractors DO have the 10" wide rims.

Most of the H's built before about 1947 except some of the real early ('39's and '40's with 36 inch rims) came with 10-38's on the rear and 5.50-15's on the front. The rear rims may be one of two different widths, some came with 9 inch and some with 10 inch width. Kinda hard to describe the difference in the rims appearance, but the narrower ones have sort of concave apprearance in their cross section from the drop center to the outer ring and the wider ones angle straight to the outer rim from the drop center. Some of the tractors with the narrow rim actually came with 9-38's. But like most of the other guys say, I think 12.4-38's would be the best size for your tractor, anything larger will look sorta "pinched" and the greater diameter will make your tractor look rear end high and somewhat "sap" the pull it has in each gear. Most H's built after 1947 or so came with 11-38's which are the same as 12.4-38's.
