Farmall h starting problem again

Okay the starter was jammed in the flywheel. But it still wont start. I do think i screwed something up when i put on the tune up kit because i do not have spark. There is no ignition switch so thats not the problem, coil shouldnt be the problem. Im hoping its the timing. Currently i have the points set so there is a gap when the distributor hits a corner on the shaft. Is this right? Thanks

assuming a distributor and not a mag, set points a .020 open at the widest point. remove coil wire, replace it with a spark plug wire and a spark plug laying on the engine so it has a good ground. turn engine over till points fully close. with battery power to the coil, remove distributor cap, rotor and dust shield. with a small screwdriver, manually open and close the points. you should see a small spark at the points, and the coil should be firing the spark plug.

ill try what you said glennster. also should the coil be heating up when the engine has only been cranked a little bit? could the coil be my problem?

You say you have a dist so how do you get battery voltage to the coil to make spark for the engine to fire. no wonder it wont start you need batt voltage to the coil.

theres a wire running from neg terminal or battery to coil. and the coil is getting juice. brand new coil now. still not getting spark???

the coil shouldnt heat up that quick. do you have a test light? if so, disconnect the wire that goes from the distributor to the coil, hook one end of the test lite up to the distributor wire that came from the coil. touch the test lite probe to the power source on the tractor. if you open the points up, the lite should go out. it should glow when the points are closed. if it glows when the points are open, there is a short either at the point where the power wire goes thru the distributor housing, or inside the distributor, the connection at the condenser is shorting out.

The points and condenser are connected to the stud (pass through) on the side of the distributor. This connection is often incorrectly reassembled causing a short to ground that would also make the coil warm up due to being on all the time.
The order of stuff from outside to inside is:
nut, lock washer, flat washer, connector from coil loop, lock washer, nut, flat washer, plastic/fiber insulator (with small end in the hole), then on the inside, a flat fiber washer (insulator on the inside over the small end from outside), flat washer, nut, spring and copper (on some), condenser connector, lock washer, nut.
This makes it conduct directly to the points movable contact.

You need a sw to turn it on and off.How many volts are you getting to the coil. Do you have a mag with a mounted coil outside or do you have a dist either case you do need the sw to turn the voltage on and off.

the problem was the distributor cap. i had spark coming out of the coil when i switched the point back and forth. when i switched the cap with my other h it fired right up. thanks everyone.
