Interesting. I have a Farmall M with a Heisler and now I know what speeds the kit added to the main tranny.

The bidding was less than $10, be a nice piece for someone who has one. No, I'm not selling it, was just doing a Heisler search

For those of you who are not familar with the Heisler 9 speed it provides four additional gear ranges between the standard 4th and 5th factory gearing. I saw a thread on this forum sometime ago and I think Jim Becker posted the actual speeds for the added gear ranges but I can't recall what they were except they were between 7 and 12 mph I believe. I am fortunate enough to have both a H and M Iowa tractors with the Heisler 9 speed tranny installed. Both were post delivery dealer retrofits. I first heard they came about to provide a 7 mph gear for using a rotary hoe which required a speed range the original tractors didn't have. My uncle who farmed corn and beans in Iowa near Williamsburg had a M with one and he used it to pull loaded wagons of corn on the county roads back to the storage areas. Later I believe the Super H and Super M had 4th bumped up to around this 7 mph speed. My main use with the Heisler engaged is to have decent travel speeds, like a 12 mph 4th with a good sized load where you still have plenty of engine torgue for pulling wagons of corn or hay up a moderate grade. They are about the nicest enhancement along with power steering and engine driven hydraulic pumps for these old Farmalls. M&W also made a 9 speed but it really looks like an add on with their cable engagement. The Heisler components looks like they were factory pieces which seem to look right in place on the H and M as all the components are cast and solid linkages like those you commonly see on Farmall tractors. Another note, I searched very hard for a Farmall H with a Heisler and believe they are very uncommon as they weren't the common tillage tractor like the M and few of them were converted it appears. I only heard and saw about three or four in the five years it took me to locate a very nice H with one installed. Both of my tractors with the Heisler were southern to central Iowa tractors and I also believe they were somewhat common in Illinois also. Hope this adds to the understanding of this thread, Hal.

Does this 9 speed use the lever or the cable for shifting?

I"m not an expert, just started looking into this 9-speed a few days ago. My understanding is the Heisler 9-speed uses a level that looks very well put together and like it could have come from the IH factory.

My understanding of the M&W 9-speed is that the early ones used a cable and the later ones used a rod that looked better.
