F460 Hydraulic Noise

My Farmall 460 hydraulic pump started making noises. The noise is intermittent (cycles/surges) and seems to increase/decrease in speed with the throttle. It goes away when I put the system under load by raising the fast hitch. I changed the fluid and filter, cleaned the orifice and replaced the o-ring on the piston in the relief valve. I also replaced the o rings in the 3/4 line going from the pump to the relief valve which was leaking. I checked the posts here already, but is there anything I missed?

Check the "single and double remote" control settings.

They are the two values right below the dash (about boot top level. You can turn them with a adjustable wrench. If they are off just a little it will make the system howl.

I'm assuming a 460 is the same as a 560 with this answer.

FREEING THE SYSTEM OF TRAPPED AIR[/b:dcb4421d9c]

Start the tractor engine and operate it at a moderate idle speed. With the filler plug removed , slowly move the control handle or andles back and forth ten or twelve times through their full range of travel.

Then with the handles in the neutral position, stop the engine. If necessary add fluid up to the proper level.....

From your post, you did a thorough fluid/filter change and took the time with seals, etc. I recall others over time with similar problem. It would be great if you would post back your results/solution(s) so others could learn. Good luck problem solving, hope you get the girl running smoothly soon.

Did your orfice screen have a check ball in it or did it have one previously. If it did there will be a hole for a roll pin to hold ball in place. What happens with those is the check ball bounces back and forth and closes the orfice hole too small. It should be .031 when new. I drill them out a little to make up for leakage agcross the regulator valve land in the hydraulic valves. So , depending on what you have for an orfice will determine your course of action. It is a trial and error to get the correct size, too small it will go on demand intermitently or constant when warmed up good, too large a hole and it will not go on demand. .040 would be a starting point. If it quiets down when on demand you are most likely ok with the filter and or sucking air situation.

I bled the system a couple of times and it got better, but still makes noise for a minute or two after I start it cold. Also, I just noticed a leak in the front. I "fixed" a pin hole leak in the power steering line under the radiator several years ago, probably with JB Weld. If it is in the same place, this time I'll try to silver solder the ends to a new piece of steel line. I'll post back when I get that done.
