Replacing bolster bushings on H

The lower bolster bushing is shorter than the hole in the casting. How far should the new bushing be inserted? Should it be flush with the bottom, or farther up in the casting? Thanks for any info.

I believe it is flush with the bottom. Be sure the thrust bearing below it is not in contact with it.
Also you can look at the wear on the shaft to be sure the bushing is where it was in its former location. Jim

when you take it out keep it in the same way it came out so you can compare it to the new one. You need to line up the grease hole in the bushing. I always take out the grease zert and use a long skrewdriver so I know it is in far enough. This is the correct way to fix most of the steering wobble problems in a front end. I also apply a new layer of grease everywhere when I put them together.

Thanks for reply. I already installed the new one, but may have positioned it too far up. The new ones do not come with a grease hole, you have to drill a hole thru the grease fitting hole. The old one which has the hole already it it was not lined up with the grease fitting. So much for lubrication.

Thanks for reply. The new one is already installed, but I think I can take it out and reposition it. I'll have to drill a new hole for the grease, since the new bushings from the IH dealer don't come with grease holes. The thrust bearing should not be inside the bushing, and should contact the upper end of the casting, right below the seal, correct?
