300U Steering Filler Plug (Photo)

I know the owners manual calls for 1.3pt 80wt. gear lube in the steering gearbox. The filler plug is supposed to be on the top left side of the box. The only thing I have ever done to mine is put gun grease in the fitting shown in photo. Is this the location of the 80wt filler or am I missing it.

Hi, Dell.

My 350 Utility has a pipe plug in that spot.

My 300 Utility has a grease fitting similar to yours, adapted to the steering box via a pipe bushing that has enough green paint on it to tell that it's not original.

I think there are some discussions in the archives regarding this issue. If I remember correctly, some guys recommend using that fitting to fill the box with cornhead grease.

I searched the archives but found nothing on the grease fitting. I searched again using various keywords and did locate posts relating.
It seems it was something that was done more on the 300U than 350U.

I need to take a look at the right gear shaft when the weather warms.
Has anyone ever split the box while it is still on the tractor. It seems like there is room for the right side case cover to slide off from the right side gear shaft easily or even if the shaft comes out still attached to the case.

Anyone done this.

Thanks,
Dell
