Pulled the pan on an M I just got. Earlier I found no AF in the oil. I pulled the oil pan to clean it out. After a couple of days with the pan off, I noticed AF dripping down from somewhere around number 3 piston. There is no oil floating in the rad at all. Bad head gasket? By the was, when I pulled the valve cover, there was a ton of CLEAR condensation.

Coolant on the piston can be either a gasket (hopefully) or a cracked head. Either way taking the head off is necessary. If there is clear evidence of gasket failure, and no crack evidence, and I was a fast and cheap mechanic I would go with the gasket. If I was doing a valve job, or had a feeling it night be a crack, I would have the head checked for cracks. I assume the coolant is on the inside of the sleeve, and not between the sleeve and the block!! a different problem and not cheap. Tha usually requires a rebore of that cylinder and a repair sleeve, then bored to fit a new dry wear sleeve like the original. Jim

I am going to pull the head in the AM and pray for a bad gasket (that just sounds wrong, to pray for something bad??) I have a couple of those gaskets around the shop. The father to a guy I work with owns a head shop so I'll more than likely have it checked anyway. Thanks!!

Before you pull the head off do a pressure check on it to see if it is coming down the inside of the sleeve or the outside of the sleeve.

Have the head magna-fluxed to see if there's a crack. I would have them check the surface for flatness too. Hal
