does anyone have any suggestions on what to use for engine oil, trans, and hyd oil for a 400 lp. just overhauled the motor and went completely through the tractor and getting ready to start adding all the fluids.

You left out IPTO oil.

Use 15-40 for engine.

Use Hy-tran or equivalent for everything else but the radiator.

any good SAE 30 non-detergent oil for first 50hrs then any SAE 30 detergent. Hy-Tran or any good hydraulic oil that meets IH specs. SAE 90 gear grease in the trans and rear end.

If you have a TA DO NOT use SAE 90 in the transmission and final drive. It will cause problems with the TA and lead to early failure of the low side clutch assembly.

90 wt gear oil will not permit the TA to lock up.

I believe all CaseIH dealers will pour 15-40 into a 400 engine. Doubt if they even stock single weight SAE 30.

What do you recommend to use in trans? My tractor has the high drum axles because it was a cotton harvestor.

Won't hy-tran be too light for the rear end? I'm going to change the oils in the 450, and mine seems to have 80-90 in rear end and T.A. housing.

its the additives in the oil that counts. not like its water. if you have 80-90 in your 450 with ta , its not correct.has to be hy-tran.

I assume you are refering to the sprague (one way) clutch. I agree, the TA planetary gears and the one way clutch need Hytran. Jim

The transmission and finals and drop boxes all have the Hytran in them. Hytran is circulated through the TA unit from the trans, thus it is not separate. Hytran fluid and JD hydraulic iol (and others that meet the spec.) are high pressure lubricants suitable for gear box operation in many applications. Jim

We rebuilt a farmall m 38 years ago. Put 15-40 shell rotella in it. Had to replace valve cover gasket several times during that period of time.Engine was always clean inside and never used a drop of oil.

With respect, this is just not true. The engine design is absolutely compatible with modern oils. THe bearings are made from similar compounds forun today, the seals are all compatible, and the lubricity and stability are far better in todays oils.
Old non detergent oils could be from crude high in Paraffin (Pennsylvania oils were) however, they were all mineral oils. There are many good articles and posts on oils in the archives. The idea of putting 90 wt. in a TA equipped tractor is not operational, they do not allow the TA sprague to lock. Hytran it is. Jim

I was under the impression that all LP engines should use "low-ash" oil in the engine. Valvoline and other oil bottlers do offer low-ash oils for propane.
