Tranny Oil Capacity in an H

Finally had a nice thaw, so now my H is no longer frozen in place from water in the tranny. Anyone know what the capacity is for oil in the tranny? Are you guys using Hy-Tran or 80/90? Last question, what sort of tool are you using to remove the filler plug, I know on a Super A I could use my breaker bar, but I certainly don't have any breaker bar big enough for the H?

8 gallons capacity, I use 80/90 and am happy with it. It helps to slow the gears down when shifting. I use the straight end of a 24" gooseneck bar to open the cap. It is 6 or 8 sided so you can put the tip diagonally in the square hole and put a crescent wrench on the shaft to pop it loose.

Just so you know: After you fill the H with new tranny oil you will find some leaking onto your floor. The driveshaft seal will leak, its probably leaked for years and the oil level has gotten down below the seal and you have never noticed it. I have done two H's replacing the gear oil and bringing them up to proper specs and both leaked the new gear oil out on the floor because the seal was bad and they had been filled to the proper level. The seals are changed through the belly pan and it takes a little over an hour, longer if there is a belly pump. You may be lucky and not have a leak but seeing new oil on the floor is a reality.

Zachary; Question for you, I have a H and when we worked to trans we put five gallons of 80/90 and the oil came out the plug hole for checking the level, did we not put enough in? We do have some gear noise and I am questioning if we put enough in and that is why we are getting the noise. Any help there? Thanks

I know guys that run 5 gallons of hytran with no ill effects. They do it to drop a few pounds for pulling, but they "use" their tractors as well. Use being tractor rides, plow days, and parades.
I actually know of one guy with an A that claims he pulls with 3 gallons of oil in the rearend. He said he added it one gallon at a time until the growling stopped.

I don't know what to think. Are you sure that you completely drained it prior to putting in the new oil, and was it on a level surface when you checked the level plug? I can't think of anything else that would make it run out that soon. If you only drained the front or the rear drain plug but not both that would explain what happened too.

Thanks; i did double check the owners manual and it
does call for around 6 gal. I also see that the rear
axle housing calls for 3 1/2 quarts of oil, so I
will check that also.
Thanks Randy

Zachary; Thanks, did have the trans all apart and drained and cleaned, did find the owners manual calls for around 6 gal. So I will double check it again and see what I find.
Thanks so much
Randy
